Florida at 20 weeks pregnant?

Hi all,

I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I am down to help on a school trip to Florida in April. I will be 20 weeks gone. In terms of the itinerary it is busy but not too bad at all, it's 10 days but a few of those are pool/shopping. I am very much the 'extra' member of staff so very little is my responsibility. It is a sports tour, I wouldnt need to do anything beyond possibly umpire a netball match. School has been very supportive and have said I can drop out later towards the date if I want to.

My midwife couldn't give me much info on zika. There hasn't been a recorded outbreak for ages but it would have to remain Zika free until August to be off the list entirely.

So far my pregnancy has been pretty straightforward, a couple of very tired days but generally ok. I would love to go if I could.

What do you think?

It sounds great and not too much at all. Although I'd definitely have a discussion with DH about the zika risk before going ahead. I'd go if you're both ok with it but pass if either of you isn't.

I wouldn't personally go, purely because of the zika risk (though I am a worrier). I kmow the probability is tiny but the comsequence is huge.

And although you feel fine now, you just don't know how you'll feel nearer the time. Although if the school are happy for you to drop out nearer the time I guess you could wait and see. I would also have found the flight hard work at 20 weeks. Though I find long haul hard work when not pregnant.

If you do go whose insurance are you covered by - is it the schools, if so I'd want to check really carefully what was.coveted as any health care in the states is extremely costly. In addition, if you need any medical care how will you feel about being with your colleagues rather than your partner? In this respect it's very different to going to holiday.

As I say I'm a bit of worrier so I'm probably more cautious than most though!

Just come back from a Zika red list country at 18weeks. I did my research into that country before going. They have 1.2 million births a year and have had one baby born with mircocephaly with suspected link to Zika in last 4 years. They have 92 million ppl and about 400 recorded cases of Zika in last 2 years. I decided statistically I was more likely to lose the baby every day I get in my car.

I covered myself in 50% deet spray. Got on bite on the last day. Nhs are running bloods, I'm not overly concerned just being thorough.

A lot can happen in a pregnancy and you shouldn't put your life on hold. Equally, there's no point going if you spend the whole time worrying.

Florida is a big place, with lots of women having babies every day. Seems scary when we're sat at home in the UK looking at a Zika red list, but when you are there, you realise that life is carrying on normally.

I have just got back from Florida and zika is no longer any risk there according to signs in all airports! It was lovely and relaxing and I would highly recommend it - the weather made me feel so much better and if you get too hot everywhere is air conditioned so it wasn't so easy to cool down. Flying was fine too, I was 24 weeks when I went and 26 when I flew back and wore flight socks. It did me so much good to have a holiday!

Was so easy to cool down even...

Hi I went to Florida In august for three weeks, I was 12 weeks pregnant at the time. I found it very difficult with the heat and humidity also we theme parked it every day and I was knackered and extremely sick. although we did still enjoy ourselves. April weather should be fine id imagine (we done may the year before and it was still hot but not as humid) and if you have plenty of time to rest I don't see why not. Just if its over easter it will be very busy is the only thing. I stupidly didn't know anything about zika until I got there and seen signs up but if your midwife couldn't give you any information even ask your GP
