Nursing bras for the "petite" new mum

So I'm 32 weeks now and thinking about bras and stuff. Before PG I was a staggering 34AA. Went up first to 36A and now also have a couple of maternity bras that are 36B - but still a little baggy quite frankly! (Though I must say I've loving feeling this buxom ) Presumably I'll go up a bit more when the milk comes is, otherwise I think I might be too small for conventional nursing bras. Just wondered if anyone was in same boat or had any thoughts. In a way feel stupid posting this - in my mum's day you didn't wear a bra at all and just pulled up your Afghan smock! Praps I'll just do that...

Hi,

Bravado bras are quite flexible about size - yours is I think the S size in their range (there's a size below). I've seen them in a local shop (Born, in Bristol) but they're also in online sites like Jojomamanbebe. Hope this helps!

I bought nursing bras from New Look - cheap, comfy, fitted me at a 32B

NoviceKnitter I'm the same size as you & found that Asda nursing bras in 36B are a good fit. Actually went to a 'proper' lingerie shop when pg intending to spend an absolute fortune on some sexy nursing bras but left empty-handed & in a huff when the woman basically took the piss out of the size of my boobs. She kept saying that there's not much call for nursing bras that small & after about 10 minutes of this I decided 'right, sod you, you're not getting any of my money'. As I was walking out the shop she called after me 'sorry you couldn't find anything, maybe if you'd been a bit bigger you'd have had more choice'. The shop was packed too & everyone was staring.

I was gutted

I was a 32b throughout my first pregnancy. Milk came in on day 4 and I went up to 32 EE ! So if possible hold off until milk is in. John Lewis were brilliant and someone held my newborn whilst I was measured.

This time I'm 32C so hoping the change will be less dramatic.

My God Greenbos I can't believe that woman said that to you!!! And EE Incy! Wow!. Did you find your overall bust size increased or went back to normal size after breastfeeding had finished? I have a couple of friends who used to be very big and their boobs have actually shrunk!

Anyway, thanks for all this very helpful advice. I'll get shopping on Saturday avoiding expensive lingerie shops.

By the way, do you think I should wait till milk comes in before buying nursing bras, (just in case I'm FF ?

I went back to a 32b after stopping feeding so not any smaller but sadly no bigger ! Personally I would wait until milk comes in until buying bras but I know it can be a real faff.

Perhaps buy one or two in advance and then wait and see. I think the NCT can send someone round to your house to measure and fit nursing bras if shopping too traumatic but not sure if their bras are nice or not.

Will def be following all these ideas up - thanks. A friend took me to John Lewis today - usually they're my favourite shop in the world, but sure enough they let me down on nursing bras, sending me away saying I should look for a shop that specialises in particularly small sizes. Talk about feeling 13 again! My friend then dragged me reluctantly to Mothercare where they measured me as a 34DD !!!!! I tried one on thinking "yeah, right" and nearly fainted when it fit! Clearly their lingerie design team is up the spout as there's no way I'm really a DD - B is about the upper limit - but of course I bought some bras - £12.50 for 3 in the sale. They're maternity bras though not nursing as she said really I should buy those at 35/36 weeks.

So I've now been measured in three different shops and all have said something completely different. Just thought I'd share...

a nice hospital mw reckoned that bog standard lycra sports bras were as good as nursing bras.

I'm rather challenged in that department too NoviceKnitter!! 34AA pre pregnancy. Went up to a B cup during pregnancy and felt like Jordan!!!

I bought some stretchy Emma Jane bras from John Lewis which are supposed to fit from a B - D cup or something. They were ok but I ended up buying a few nursing vests from jojo maman bebe. They are just like tight fitting vests with a drop cup. As I don't have a great deal to support I figured they'd be supportive enough for me. They were actually great as they covered my post-natal flab whilst I fed!!

Good luck!

NoviceKnitter · 06/05/2007 08:01

Thanks! Like the sound of the vests... will check em out!
