Teachers risk assessment

I've just been reading my risk assessment and playtimes aren't on there... Just wondering as I've read some posts before that summer teachers don't supervise outside play in case of injury..Is footballs, children crashing into you etc... Should I put this as a risk or am I being a bit precious? Admittedly I hate covering playtimes but that's not there reason! 🙂

I am secondary so maybe a bit different but I've never actually done a risk assessment during pregnancy as I don't feel that my day to day duties would need to change. It depends how likely you feel you are to get hit in the stomach as to whether you put it down or not. I still do lunch duty in the canteen and go up and downstairs at period changeover because I don't feel like I'm actually going to get injured from these things.

First pregnancy I wasn't allowed to do play duty but we are short staffed this time so I am having to do it. I do think it's a very real risk and should be on a risk assessment if you still have to do the duty. I stick to the edge of the playground now after nearly being knocked over and bashed into several times.

I think most people would do playground duty. Babies are pretty well cushioned and I cannot imagine that being on the playground is any more risky than takng your own kids to the park or walking the dog. Just stand at the edge.

I'm a primary school teacher and I said I wasn't prepared to do playground duty on an icy/snowy days when pregnant but went out otherwise.

Just stay clear of any areas with balls flying around! A few years ago we did have a pregnant teacher who had to go and get checked out after being hit with a football.

I'm 22 weeks and have been doing playground duty as normal the whole time. But our kids aren't allowed balls on the playground.

Our risk assessment cover the potential later stages issue of standing for periods of time doing break duty or eg sports days.

We have to do duty regardless in my school, I had a fall after being run into by a Year 6 child and my principal wasn't concerned in the slightest. To be fair I also had a child with SEN who was often violent (chair throwing etc) and got little to no support with that either Hmm

Thanks everyone, I will mention that I'll stand away from the footballers and to the side 😁👍 we have a Netball court sized playground and one third is used for football. So should be manageable 👍

Wow I literally didn’t realise this was a thing! I’m 32 weeks pregnant and a primary school teacher. Not once have I done a risk assessment or not been expected to do break duty. It didn’t even cross my mind! There have been a few occasions where footballs have been a bit close for comfort and kids run RIGHT past you really quickly but I just call the kids over and remind them to be careful. I work in a small school though so maybe that’s why things are a bit more relaxed. The only things I’ve changed since being pregnant at school has been lifting anything heavy and when I go back after half term I’ve dropped my after school club as things are getting a bit tiring now. Oh and I’ve also been told to “stay away” from violent SEN children like you mention cennya. Thankfully they’re not in my class! I’m sure you’ll be fine if you’re vigilant Smile

I was off play duty from 20 weeks. No specific needs just part of the risk assessment my school did. It actually was really useful. I always had time to go to the loo. Drink water or tea and sort of rest. I will push for it again to (new school).
