Just as the title says, I've not been able to eat anything since some soup on Tuesday afternoon. I'm 10 weeks pregnant and this is my sickness just beginning to get bad. I'm struggling to keep even water down. The doctor gave me anti sickness tablets a few weeks ago but they don't seem to be helping. Does anyone have anything else that could help? I'm scared I'm going to hurt the baby as I can't eat.

I've had this with 2 pregnancies. You won't hurt the baby, but you might hurt yourself. Eat a little whenever you feel hungry. Is there anything you can eat without feeling sick? Also, travel sickness bands.

Loonyluna16 · 15/02/2018 13:53

I have a packet of wheat crunches here so I'm trying to nibble when I can but as soon as I eat it's just waves of nausea Blush

Have you tried lucozade? I know it's full of sugar but it really helped me in my last pregnancy. Or really cold fresh orange juice.

demirose87 · 15/02/2018 13:59

Also for me the stronget the flavour the better, so things like salt and vinegar crisps.

Loonyluna16 · 15/02/2018 14:14

@demirose87 that's a good idea I never thought of Lucozade actually. I'll send a message to the OH to pick some up on the way home. Always was the best thing when I was sick as a kid!

You probably already have this but if you can get some ice lollies that are not too sweet, eg. Lemonade ones, they can be a good way to keep hydrated without so much swallowing.

Sympathies to you OP, it sounds horrid. Maybe call the GP for advice about the tablets, dosage/alternatives?

Loonyluna16 · 15/02/2018 14:26

@itshappening I have some cherryade ones in the freezer. It's a mission to get down the stairs. Put some lemon zoflora in hot water last night and it smells vile I'm going to have to arm myself with my cardigan over my face to empty it and get into my kitchen. Oh they say it's all worth it in the end. At this point it bloody better be 😂

Really sorry you are going through this OP, it is awful. What meds are you on? There are various you can try so do go back to the GP for an emergency appointment if the ones you are on aren't working. You do not just have to suffer through this and you need more effective treatment asap. They should also check your urine to see if you are severely dehydrated as you may need to go into hospital for fluids if you are. The charity pregnancy sickness support have a great website with loads of info about the various meds and can offer support. There is also a hyperemesis support thread on here with lots of ladies going through the same thing who can give you advice and support. You will be told by lots of people and even the gp most probably to 'eat little and often' but I know how impossible this is when you can't even keep water down, you really need better meds. Take some comfort in the fact that this is likely the worst weeks and you should start to see some improvement soon, though don't be fobbed off by being told to wait it out til 12 weeks when it will magically disappear as it unfortunately may not. You will survive this, dreadful as it is Flowers

Kittypillar · 15/02/2018 15:07

So sorry you're feeling so awful OP Flowers I remember it well myself - I ended up in hospital on a drip mine was so bad at one stage! Of course I can't guess for you but mine really eased up around the 11 week mark and I felt so much better.

Until that point, the way I survived was Lucozade (the still kind) and a box of dry crackers by the side of the bed. I'd lie there and eat at least a couple before I even got out of bed in the morning and it really did make a HUGE difference to me. It feels counterintuitive to eat when you feel so awful but it really did help.

Loonyluna16 · 15/02/2018 21:14

@emu31 if I hear "little and often" one more time I will scream haha. I've managed to have half a cup of chicken soup which seems to be staying down for now. The anti sickness pills are cyclizine hydrochloride. I Have the midwife tomorrow morning so I'm going to mention to her and also pop round to the doctors tomorrow.

Thank you for your kind replies Flowers

Sorry you're feeling so awful, I completely understand & sympathise. I'm 19weeks & ive been like you pretty much from my 4th week. I find strong smells or tastes make me worse & have been resorting to drinking as much fluids as I can, especially Milkshakes made from fresh fruit so at least it's a form of food & there's some goodness to it. Thin soups or cup a soup on a good day can be really satisfying. It's horrible feeling so rotten. I've also had virus after virus all the way through & any form of cough or congestion makes me feel even more nauseated. I think not eating properly has made me really run down. Every one of my gp's, midwives & consultants are not concerned about me not eating as long as I'm drinking & weeing enough. I hope it gets better for you soon. Big hugs & loads of sympathy x

Rainbowbright17 · 15/02/2018 23:56

Oh & I was prescribed under the tongue melting anti sickness tablets that made me even worse so my gp prescribed me other ones that really helped me actually being sick but unfortunately not the actual nausea. Maybe asking your doctor tomorrow to try a different one may help. Good luck.

Foodylicious · 16/02/2018 08:34

I had Promethazine last time and found it really helped.

Currently 7 weeks and increasing nausea for last 2-3 weeks.
Currently deciding how bad it needs to get before I take it this time.

I had quite horrendous sickness combined with absolutely no appetite for 2 weeks straight. After that the sickness was still bad, but I could at least know what I wanted to eat. Sickness eventually went around the diabetes test mark.

Coke did well for my stomach. Water didn't do it for me (fizzy or not ). So I drank 0.5 l Coke every day. I stopped it as soon as I could, though 😊.

Only eat what you feel like. If it's crap, then eat crap.If it's strong tastes (like me) then ignore the dire advice that you should stick to bland stuff. The things you feel like have an uncanny ability of staying down.

Sweets like Haribo and dried fruit could briefly fend off nausea. I've heard other women who liked mints for this.

I felt just, lying down, watching TV and sleeping helped me cope. Thank God for the BBC. Though if you're working outside your home, then that doesn't apply unfortunately...

One pretty disgusting one that did help me keep down food in the morning when I was still throwing up , was waiting for the 'purge '(to use a nicer phrase), then rush downstairs and have breakfast (in the beginning that was just an orange, I switched to muesli later). Otherwise my stomach would reject anything, even water. I also did this if dinner was late, because it was nicer than throwing up everything.

Oh and strangely, scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed made me feel sick. Anyone else had that?

Sea bands, ginger, little and often etc. All good advice I'm sure but also sooooo misguided in my case.

Good luck.

kikibo · 16/02/2018 10:19

Sorry, no paragraphs on the app.

Smoothies, as a pp said! I forgot about those!

Namethecat · 16/02/2018 10:19

Could you try a slice of fresh ginger in hot water. It's supposed to help.

Foodylicious · 16/02/2018 12:57

I soon realised that pg sickness made no sense.
I absolutely could not eat good sometimes and be in the verge of vomming or having just vommed and would eat Haribo tangfastics, opal fruits or have some lemonade. I could then manage actual (beige food) after that.

I also used to butter some scotch pancakes, wrap in cling film and take up to bed. Then I would eat one first thing before I even moved my head!

I did def need medication though and had 6 weeks off work. I tried to stop taking it every few weeks but would be vomtastic again within 24hrs so needed it till the end

Foodylicious · 16/02/2018 12:58

Oh, and finding goods that made 'nice' sick helped too
Envy

Loonyluna16 · 16/02/2018 14:18

Thanks for everyone's replies... I was at midwife today and she's not overly concerned about my eating she just wants me to make sure I'm drinking water. I bought butterscotch sweeties today and Haribo strawberrys and it's delightful to have some flavour again. I've to speak to the doctors again to see about changing medication. So hopefully things should start to look up from here xx
