Any tips from (former) tea addicts?

I drink probably around 6 mugs of tea a day on average: sometimes it feels like the only thing that gets me through the day! Occasionally have a coffee or some chocolate as well, though almost never drink fizzy drinks. Just read on the NHS website that 2 mugs of tea equates to 75mg of caffeine and the recommended maximum is 200mg in pregnancy, which means even 3 mugs is over the limit. Shock I have no idea what I'm going to do! I was resigned to the lack of booze, but tea...! Does anyone have any tips for what to replace tea with? I've never liked herbal "teas" much. Are there any good decaf options? I'm a Clipper or Twinings Assam kinda girl usually; don't like English Breakfast or blends like Yorkshire/PG Tips etc.

Another vote for Yorkshire decaf here - it's the best one.

I also went off tea (along with pretty much everything else) completely during the first trimester, but now that I'm into the second trimester I'm having a few cups a day again. Before pregnancy I probably drank 4-5 cups a day.

I"ve gone completely off tea - it just tastes of metal. I am Not Impressed with my pregnant body tbqh and have shed hormonal tears over it! Twinings St Clements is nice, the odd peppermint tea but I'm mainly looking forward to that first cuppa once the baby is out (it comes back pretty much instantly. Yay!)

When I was pregnant I drank a one or two cups of normal tea and then switched to rooibos if I fancied another. But honestly, I doubt several cups of tea will do any harm. If I was pregnant again I don't think id bother worrying about it tbh!

Clipper do one of the beat decaf teas I have ever tasted. Well worth tracking some down. If not in your local super, aren't, maybe Amazon?

BertieBotts · 14/02/2018 18:32

Just buy decaf of your normal brand. You have to steep it for a bit longer to get the flavour, but it tastes the same!

BTW if two cups is 75mg then you should be alright with four - even four and a half technically!

Make yourself a large mug or flask with just one teabag? Surely the caffeine is in the teabag? One can stretch easily to two cups or an extra large cup if you prefer! Grin This is what I do for a cheat. But I have mostly gone off tea.

I second m&s decaf tea

I am a twinings tea drinker but the decaf is awful

M&S decaf is very acceptable and a third of the price of twinings

I switched to red Bush through all my pregnancies. Caffeine free

caffeinequick · 14/02/2018 18:50

I just swapped for decaf.

WhyteKnyght · 14/02/2018 23:32

Update: Tesco had nothing, so I went to M&S and bought theirs. Just trying a cup now and it's really not too bad! Thanks everyone who recommended it. Brew

Pukka vanilla chai is decaf and very nice.

I like Twinings decaf.

Also I think the reason most people dislike herbal teas is because they're a bit weak (smell better than they taste). But I love T2 the shop because they will make up a cup of anything you're thinking of buying and they're teas tend to pack a punch - currently alternating drinking their Toasty Nougat and a Beetroot one.

I swapped to Sainsbury's fair trade decaf tea. I also tried tetley abd aldi's but found them a bit rubbish. Been on decaf now around 18 months because we're TTC

Remember, NHS advice is to wait half an hour after eating before drinking tea or coffee (decaf or regular) as the tannins limit iron absorption from your foods. I didn't find this out until about twenty weeks.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 15/02/2018 09:15

Clipper do a decaff. I didn't like it - it was one of the weakest I tried - but I like the teas you don't, so it may be much more to your taste!

MarklahMarklah · 15/02/2018 09:18

I just cut down to three cups a day, and made them slightly smaller & weaker. DD is a very robust 7 year old now!
