The Misery Of Hyperemesis

Having got over the stress of a inconclusive early scan, I am now so ill I can barely remember that this is a positive thing! I am throwing up all day, barely keeping any food or liquid down and just about avoiding hospital (my doctor wanted to admit me for redhydration yesterday). I am just so down and nothing seems to help. Has anybody else been through this? When will I feel better? Barely getting through the day at the moment or coping with my two children, one of whom has special needs. JakB

Oh this is awful. I wasn't quite this bad, although was sick a few times each and every day til around 13 weeks (you may not want to hear that but don't know how far you are). It's absolutely awful, I remember thinking how miserable being pg was and I didn't enjoy it at all. Looking back, I can't believe I felt so bad because now at 20 weeks I feel fantastic and have done for ages. It will go, everybody kept telling me that and I didn't believe them. Remember you will get these helpful people that say ''so and so had it the whole way through...'' But TBH this is not common.

I would go to hospital though as they will give you anti-emetics (anti-sickness tablets) and they may give you some relief.

I was hospitalised for a week with this at just 7 weeks pg. I lost a stone in 10 days, couldn't keep water down etc

I would go to the hospital if you have any way of someone looking after your other dc's.

I found ssucking ice lollies helped as i couldn't actually swallow water and dehydration make syou dizzy and sick.

Not going to hospital will just make it harder - at least get stabilised with fluids and discuss your drug options. Ondansetron is the best probably and if you have a sufficient dose you should be able to stay out of hospital thereafter (speaking from long and bitter experience with my first).

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I'm a EdieM- that gives me hope that it WILL pass. I am 10 weeks on Saturday. I have lost over half a stone since last week! mumto2girls and hannahsaunt- that's really good advice. The only problem is I'm really wary of drugs as my DD has special needs. I know loads of women take them and have no problems but I'm worried about anything as we are susceptible (DD has autism and severe learning difficulties). But even going in to rehdrate would help I suppose

well i found that just the drip and the bed rest helped an awful lot. Once the pressure of having to look at/prepare/eat food was taken from me I fel alot better.
At one point my blood pressure was 70/40..i felt like i was going to die.

I was still sick after leaving hospital but it was nothing like before I went in.

JakB · 01/05/2007 12:17

mumto3girls, yes, I think if it's really no better by the end of the week I will have to go in

I really feel for you JakB. Although never hospitalised I had really terrible sickness with all 3 of mine. Last time I was at the doctors crying at 8 weeks, saying I couldn't take anymore, he put me on Stemetil which really helped although didn't stop the sickness entirely.
As others have said going to hospital just to get yourself stabilised is going to be the best thing.
Let us know how you are getting on x

Sweetie, there is a support group, I think. Will find details and email you.

I am 12 weeks and the hyperemesis is just passing now. I am still ill but just not as bad as I have been.

I have been totally debilitated, lying on the sofa most of the day and sleeping as soon as dh gets home. Poor dd has really suffered.

Anyway, there is light at the end of the tunnel now, I still feel ill but I haven't been ill for 3 days

It's a website called HelpHer.org I think. Type in Hyperemesis on google and it'll come up - brilliant site and absolutely great support and advice.
I had constant sever nausea though not so much the throwing up, and managed it with various drugs...still hellish but not as bad as many.
From what I use to read on the site, it always helped TONS to go in and get rehydrated, as it made people feel so much better for even just a few days...so worth it.
Also being dehydrated is one of the worst things for nausea, so it might help a lot to get that drip started sooner rather than later.
Sounds appalling what you are going through, but take heart from the statistics that say many sufferers of HG actually have a big improvement in the second trimester - it might come back in the third but equally might not.
I know the first tri is the hardest and seems never ending, but also between 9 and 13 weeks is known to be the worst stage - more hormones, before they peak and ease off after about 14wks.
Thinking of you xx

Sorry you're going through this - it's absolutely awful. Mine cleared up around 19 weeks. One thing I found made a huge difference was how tired I was and how much I tried to do. Staying in bed was really the only thing that eased it - difficult with your 2 kids but better than being hospitalised regularly. One option is to get occasional injections of the anti-emetics. That way you aren't taking drugs constantly but you get a day when you feel OK and can get stuff in your system.

Hope you feel better soon.
