What BMI classes you as high risk?

I'm currently trying to lose weight before TTC and I am just wondering at what point does your BMI class you as high risk?

What happens differently if you have a high risk pregnancy due to high BMI?

35 is the limit between midwife care and consultants care x

Thanks @tittletattoo - mine is currently 31 but I was concerned as I'm classed as obese... Blush

Mine was 32 at booking in appointment, but was referred to the consultant for another reason anyway. When I met with the consultant at 16 weeks she mentioned the risks involved with a high BMI, Asked if I wanted to take a daily baby aspirin (which I declined), suggested I have the gestational diabetes test at 28 weeks and booked me in for 32 week scan which I had today. Passed the GD test with flying colours and baby is spot on average size as found out today. I've also only put on 2lbs the entire pregnancy which I'm shocked by! So long story short, they will mention the risks of course, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything bad and if anything - you'll just get a couple extra appointments or scans. Good luck!!

Weight alone isn't a risk, I know plenty of woman were mwl then consultant led for various reasons such as reduced movement etc.

I've lost 50kg since first pregnancy and this one and I'm still consultant based.

In my trust would have been 30. I was 29.5.

Also I needed some help for getting pregnant as had pcos. I was told no help if my weight was going over 30.

zaalitje · 06/02/2018 04:30

My midwife said 30, I was 29+.
Still consultant led but for other reasons.

zaalitje · 06/02/2018 04:30

And that was BMI at 8 week booking appt.

I was 30 with both children. I was Midwife led for both and my weight was never mentioned. I had to take fragmin injections both times 2 weeks after birth because of my weight and age (36 and 38)

I lost weight both pregnancies and ended up a few pounds lighter than when I started!

sophherts · 06/02/2018 06:57

Mine is 31.5 and the GP said I might be consultant led, it's on the border so the hospital will decide

Pittcuecothecookbook · 06/02/2018 07:39

I was dead on 30 and have gtt test scheduled and was prescribed extra folic acid for first 12 weeks. Over 35 in my area would have meant additional scans and support. I've put on 5lbs, need to review my diet as not being sensible with work treats. I'm 22 weeks

IIRC, it would be considered as a factor anywhere over 30. But it would only start being a sufficient factor in itself at over 35

(I was over 30 for one pregnancy, but having had a normal previous delivery, it was considered just to be dismissed IYSWIM)

mindutopia · 06/02/2018 13:19

At 31, you should be fine, but if you feel you need to lose a little bit of weight, then there's no harm in doing it first. I had a BMI of 28 with my first and then 30 with this pregnancy (I'm also 37). I've been considered low risk both times, with the home birth team (my first was a home birth and planning another this time). The only difference having a BMI of 30 or more made was that I was offered a GTT this time. I declined as I don't see how it's suddenly a 'risk' because I'm like 10lbs heavier than I was last time even though everything else is the same. The midwives were fine with this and we carried on as normal.

30 is the upper limit for midwife led unit births here, 35 and over for consultant led care. That is if it is your only risk factor, I think there is a risk combination applied if you have a history of high BP, are older etc.

BillyAndTheSillies · 06/02/2018 13:25

My trust was 35. I was at 34 when I got pregnant, turned up for the consultant and he questioned why I was there. After some blood pressure tests and GD at 28 weeks signed me back off to midwife led.

Where I live it’s 30 is the cut off then you are high risk. But it doesn’t really mean your going to run into problems if your bmi is slightly high
