Hi everyone,

I'm currently 5w+1 and keep waking up from sleep on my tummy.

It has always been a comfortable position and I always make sure I go to sleep on my left side but sure enough I keep waking on my front.

I know I'm still very early on so it shouldn't cause any problems at the moment but I want to get into a good habit for the future.

Any tips or suggestions on how I can stop it?

As you grow you will find that it’s impossible to sleep on your tummy, so you will naturally sleep in another position.
As for now I can only suggest a pillow between your legs, or a long pregnancy pillow.
To be honest I don’t think there’s much you can do to change your position right now.

In time you're supposed to sleep on your left side, so baby doesn't block some artery (highly technical explanation) which they would do if you slept on your right hand side. Maybe get a long pregnancy pillow to faciliate this / put it behind you to stop you rolling onto your stomach or a V shaped pillow to help stop you moving.

I'm currently pregnant and think sleep position only becomes important in the 3rd trimester where sleeping on your back has been linked to an increase in stillbirth. You can sleep on either side (though some studies show the left side is slightly preferable).
Here's a great link with lots of info:

Honestly, don't worry about it. It's perfectly safe at this point, and by the time you've got a big bump it won't be comfortable to do anyway. Sleep well while you can!

It's from about 27 weeks you need to be trying to sleep on your side.
It's to do with not restricting blood supply to baby, at 5 weeks you're not yet sharing a blood supply as the baby is living off the yolk sac and placenta not yet attached.

You can sleep any way you like until the 3rd trimester and as long as it feels comfortable tbh. You will either still be able to sleep on your stomach, in which case feel free, or not, in which case you don't need to train yourself into anything because you'll change automatically. But of all the things to think about in pregnancy, don't stress about trying to "train" yourself into a particular sleeping position months before you need to. Believe me, if and when sleeping on your back becomes a problem for you, you will know.

Make the most of being able to sleep on your front - I'm 28 weeks and really really miss it! Can never get comfortable and never sleep more than 2 hours at a time now 🙁

mindutopia · 05/02/2018 13:11

No, sleep on your tummy and be comfortable. You will have months of your hips and shoulders aching and getting no sleep because you are so uncomfortable sleeping on your side. Enjoy sleeping however you want now and worry about it once it becomes uncomfortable.

Iwantaunicorn · 05/02/2018 13:21

I honestly wouldn’t worry - the sleeping on your side is only a big deal once you hit your third trimester, by which time you’ll be unable to sleep on your tummy anyway!

If you really want to try not to do it, maybe pop a slim pillow under your tummy whilst lying on your side, so it’s more likely to be uncomfortable if you roll on to your front in your sleep.

I slept on tummy until 27 weeks. Altho even now I wake up very much on belly. At 36 weeks. Not fully but nearly. And I wake and panic and move.
