Overheating

Hi everyone- just wondering if anyone might have had a similar experience to me and might be able to provide some reassurance. I have just found out I'm pregnant (hurray), only I am worried about something that happened a week ago. I was sleeping in a freezing cold room so I covered myself in three duvets - in the middle of the night I woke up with an extremely elevated heart rate and racing, panicky thoughts. I got up to get water and everything returned to normal as soon as I'd cooled down, but I've no idea how long I had been overheated under the duvets, and now of course I have read all about the damage to the neural tube that can be caused by just 10 mins of elevated temperature. I know women in v hot countries must have to live with the heat during pregnancy, but I would love to hear from someone who had experienced the same sudden heat flush/heart flutter and found that all was okay! It is an awfully long wait to find out. Many thanks.

I think you waking up and getting water is your body’s way of not overheating. Your body realised it was getting too hot so woke you up to change that.

I worried about stuff like this so much in the early weeks until I spoke to my midwife, and she said to remember that women have been having babies for thousands of years, our bodies are designed to have babies, and that nature has its ways to protect both of you. It made me feel a lot better!

Forgot to say - I woke up in the night when I must’ve been about 5 weeks, soaked in sweat, heart racing, the works. Not even a particularly warm night so must have been hormonal. No problems on any scans so far.

Thanks so much - that's really good to hear and great advice from the midwife. Yes, good to trust the subliminal response of the body. I feel like it knows so much that I don't at the moment- ie about what is going on down below! Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy too.
