Pregnant - will my belly button affect baby?

I'm pregnant with my first child and I am freaking out because I don't know who to ask. Warning this may be gross for some of you -

For so long I've always had black stuff inside my belly button that I've cleaned out and it just grows back. It's probably bacteria but I've noticed that it's far inside the belly button that I can't get it out. I was just wondering, a lot of people tell me how it's connected to the baby & the sources of food is provided through the umbilical - so I was just wondering, will the bacteria inside my belly button affect my baby? I'm a first time mother so anxiety levels are very high ha.

Firstly, that stuff in your belly button is just a combination of fluff, dead skin cells, sweat etc that accumulates there. It is not harmful. As your tummy gets bigger, you'll probably get an "outie" belly button and then this stuff won't build up there!

Secondly, baby gets its nutrients into ITS umbilicus, from the placenta, inside your womb. YOUR umbilicus has nothing to do with it - that is just rhe place where your own umbilical cord entered your body from your mother's placenta/womb, when you were a foetus.

Your belly button is how you were connected to your own mother. Your baby will be connected (via umbilical cord) to the placenta from the area that will become their belly button after birth. They arent connected to your belly button at all.

As PP said, your belly button is where you connected to your mother and not where baby connects to you. You have a womb inside you, the fertilised egg will become baby/yolk sac and a placenta will attach to the side of your womb - the placenta will feed the baby through the cord that is connected to (what will be) their bellybutton.

As for your bellybutton though, maybe try dousing it in tea tree oil. Could be regular lint and fluff but if you’re prone to infection it’s worth dousing it in antibacterial stuff to prevent it from happening for your own sake Flowers
