Hi all,

My DP and I have booked to go away end of June to go Berlin for 4 days as our last break as a couple for a while. I'm 11wks today and due 26/08.

We've only booked accommodation at the moment. Haven't gone overboard and splashed out, but have booked something 100% refundable just in case.

Are flights out of the question? I'll just be in the 3rd trimester. He would prefer to drive to Berlin but isn't thinking about amount of toilet stops or discomfort of car travel. Going to hold off booking travel until I see midwife and might not even book anything until closer to June but just wondering what your thoughts are?

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but we've not been away in a few years!

How many weeks will you be?

Most airlines require a fit to fly letter from 28 weeks and have no flying after 34 weeks.

TheCaptainsCat · 04/02/2018 09:07

Ryanair let you fly until 36 weeks with a fit to fly letter, I'm a singleton pregnancy. I'm flying with them at 33-34 weeks.

TheCaptainsCat · 04/02/2018 09:09

*in a singleton pregnancy. Also it's until 36+6 they allow you to fly. Other airlines might be 34 weeks though from what I've seen.

The BA cut-off is 36 weeks so you'd be a month inside that. Far better than sitting in a car for 10 hours I should think. I flew to Frankfurt at 35 weeks and just took my letter and wore flight socks.

DaisyLand · 04/02/2018 09:26

Right now in my baby moon 30 pregnant.

Easyjet lets you fly til 35w

Ad long as you’re feeling ok there shouldn’t be any problem. I booked the flight tickets less than a month ago as did want to wait and see how was I feeling.

Make sure you’ve got an insurance and European health card

Thelampshadelady · 04/02/2018 09:34

Not as far along as you will be (23 weeks) but just flown to and from New York and traipsed around there for 4 days. Just took it a bit easy and had regular pit stops.

Thanks I think I'll be around 31wks and it would be Ryanair. I'd far rather fly than car!

Make sure that your travel insurance will cover you for any pregnancy-related issues, and carry EHIC cards.

I went away last week at 28 weeks, had to get a fit to fly letter from GP, insurance said it wasn't a problem up to 36 weeks and had a lovely time, fly and enjoy it!

laelti · 04/02/2018 12:47

I did a domestic easyjet flight at 34 weeks. No one even questioned me! Midwife agreed it was better option than 5+ hour car journey.

I think insurance is more the issue than the airlines. I'm flying in June and I'm currently 8ish weeks (maybe slightly further along). My insurer wont insure for 'complications' past 28 weeks - I got a bit confused about what that refers to specifically (and it doesn't apply to me because I'll be under the cut off). You don't want to deliver abroad (or have other issues) and be hit with a massive bill or be stuck abroad without recourse to get you home.

gryffen · 04/02/2018 14:28

Check with what airline your going on but get specialist pregnancy insurance that covers everything from A-Z.

JJPP123 · 04/02/2018 14:32

I flew from Singapore to the UK at 30 weeks pregnant with twins.

I certainly wouldn't recommend it as I was desperately uncomfortable, even in business, but safety wise there's no issue at all.

NanooCov · 04/02/2018 14:33

Crabby I would find another insurer. My one insured up to 36 weeks. Just not for pre-existing conditions. So if you knew you had pre-eclampsia or placenta previa (for example) these would not be covered.

KTCluck · 04/02/2018 14:45

I flew to lanzarote at around 33 weeks pregnant and found it absolutely fine. Had to get a fit to fly note from my midwife who advised me to wear compression stockings but was perfectly happy for me to go. It was a lovely to have one last relaxing holiday before baby arrived. DH had wanted to cancel when we found out but afterwards agreed he was pleased we had gone.

I did get special travel insurance (allclear I think it was through, and it wasn't that much more expensive), as the insurance is already had in place wouldn't cover me at all past 28 weeks. Some of the other general ones i looked at would but not actually in relation to the pregnancy, so if you broke your leg you'd be covered but if you delivered early the baby wouldn't be. So I'd be careful to read the small print. Have a lovely holiday!

Girlwiththearabstrap · 04/02/2018 16:37

I flew to Rome at around 28 weeks and it was fine. I didn't need a fit to fly note - I'm not sure how the airline would even know how many weeks you were unless you made a specific point in telling them! As others have said, get decent insurance and have your ehic card.
