Worried about baby

Hi everyone,

I’m a bit worried about baby as movements have really reduced the last few days and baby feels really subdued which doesn’t feel normal for me. Two things that might be affecting it - i have a cold and sore throat, not sure if baby feels it when I’m under the weather? The second thing is, I went in the sea the other day! I only walked through it up to my knees but it was ice cold and afterwards felt pins and needles in my leg, warmed up with a towel quickly and had a hot shower. Do you think I could have harmed the baby? I know reduced moments can be normal but I’m worried! Thank you for taking the time to read!

How many weeks are you? I don’t think the hot/cold water will have done any harm. But you should call the midwife if you are worried

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 08:25

25 weeks, midwife not open until tomorrow!

Neither of those things will harm the baby, but you should go and get checked anyway. How many weeks are you?

Thatsnotmybody · 04/02/2018 08:26

How many weeks are you? If 28+ call your maternity unit and how in the morning for a check. Reduced movements should always be checked out, just to be on the safe side.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/02/2018 08:27

Call your maternity unit. Reduced movements should always be checked out.

You haven't harmed your baby by getting cold legs but you do need to get checked out.

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 08:29

Thank you everyone! I will call I think to be safe

Do call. I was always told that they would rather you called and went into to get checked, even if everything is fine. I went a few times with DS1, and every time, he was kicking away, but they were always lovely and insisted I had done the right thing.

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 08:42

Just called and on duty midwife calling back! Thanks everyone

Sure baby is fine in but it is ALWAYS better to be certain. I ended up popping in a few, times to get monitored, they understand and would rather be safe than sorry

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 10:25

Turns out there’s been a mix up and the midwife due to see me is now elsewhere - another midwife phoned and said she’s not overly worried and probably just a growth spurt or something but if I’m REALLY concerned she’ll see me (I felt a bit silly on the phone and like she thought I was overreacting)

Generally, pre 28 weeks they don't worry, as protocol says monitor movements from then on. Don't let her being a bit dismissive put you off calling again in the future.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/02/2018 11:37

Don't let them dismiss you if you are. Have you tried a sugary drink, cold drink, lying on your side? If you have concerns, call them back

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 11:48

Thanks sleeping yep tried these things. After caffeinated drink felt movement but feels very subdued. She said she would call me back in a few hours to see if I still wanted to see her so awaiting her call but think I will see her just to put mind at rest

Sometimes my bubs would move into a different position which would mask movements but please push to be checked. They should never fob you off when you're worried.

cazinge · 04/02/2018 12:14

Do get checked. I am 25+2 today and went in at 4am this morning due to subdued movements. All was fine, baby had just moved to a different position and my anterior placenta was blocking the movements.

Midwife said we did the right thing to go in although she told me I should have phoned sooner which in my worried state I took as meaning it was too late to do anything should something terrible have happened but what she actually meant was I should have phoned sooner so I could have had a better nights sleep. Se even said, ring earlier next time so they reallyndo prefer for you to get checked.

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 13:29

Thanks everyone, Just got back from midwife and all is ok and heartbeat is strong. Midwife wasn’t the friendliest though, clearly unimpressed that I was there and said I want to not worry unnecessary and keep turning up if possible (I haven’t been!) as it will increase chances of intervention further down the line!!!

Oh tell her to bog off (in your head).

If Tuesday you had spoke to them and god forbid something had been wrong you would never have forgiven yourself. This is your baby and if you are worried then you get checked out. Not every time baby falls asleep for two minutes but if you are genuinely worried as you are then you did the right thing

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 15:14

Thank you sleeping yes I’m glad I went. I’ve actually been quite ill since I went so I think that must be the problem, baby must have known I was ill before I did! Luckily she’s not my midwife, back to my normal midwife now!

OP posts:
TwinkleStars15 · 04/02/2018 16:28

Glad everything is okay! Always best to get checked out. She was right though about the risk of further intervention down the line, I’ve heard that three occasions of reduced movements and they refer you to a consultant and are far more likely to push for induction at term. Obviously it’s your choice about whether to be induced or not however xx

littlemissalwaystired · 04/02/2018 16:38

Don't let them put you off phoning for help. If your baby's movements are reduced then you go in and get checked out! In our unit we're always advising people to get checked if worried, we'd rather see you and offer reassuranceSmile

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 17:15

Thanks twinkle and littlemiss what a nightmare, they tell you to be vigilant for movements and count the kicks etc then tell you if you come in and make a fuss you could get early intervention.

Fortunately I won’t be getting induced due to a bad induction last time. Consultant has said this time vbac if not Elc but midwife doesn’t know that as didn’t look at my notes.

StillMissV · 04/02/2018 17:26

That's awful, my midwife was very hot on telling me to head to hospital any time I was worried. I had a lazy baby who frequently just didn't move and I had to be checked each time. Every time they were super helpful and told me I'd done the right thing!x

LadyPug · 04/02/2018 17:27

To be fair StillMiss I think it’s rare, my actual midwife is lovely but obviously not available on a Sunday

Ah LadyPug I feel for you. The community MW team were like this in my first pg and it was bollocks. Made everything so much more stressful as I felt like I was always fighting or being a nuisance. Just remember as others have said, this is your baby - the most important thing ever so don't you feel bad for a second phoning in whenever you need to. We are all behind you.

Would it help you to think 'once I have had my baby I will never see these people again, so it does not matter what they think'? That helped me.

Also, not sure how it works where you are, but you should be far enough along to ring the hospital number on your notes - they always seem to be pretty hot on movements and are often very happy to have a listen even if you're not far enough along for a ctg.
