6 Weeks pregnant, exposure to white spirit

Hi all,

I realise this is probably the pregnancy crazies but I need some reassurance/advice. I’m 6 weeks pregnant and DH decided to to a DIY project today, waxing a door in our house. I didn’t really think about what this would entail but it turns out it involves white spirit and solvent-based wax.

The smell is so strong even though I am hiding in our room with the door shut and windows open. I’m terrifying myself reading online about how dangerous this can be, apparently it can lead to birth defects.

Does anyone have any positive experience of this whilst pregnant? E.g exposed to these things and not had a child witn birth defects... thanks!

It's a very small risk, make sure the house is well ventilated now. Wash your hands etc if you've been in contact with it.

There's no point in asking how other people's pregnancies went (either positive or negative) as each one is unique.

Thanks Holly, I’m just so worried! DH is now cross with me for refusing to leave bedroom but the smell is so strong!

I agree it's a very small risk. Google will drive you mental. Also bear in mind how sensitive your sense of smell is when pregnant. If it helps I'm on my second pregnancy and planning to do some decorating next weekend- I'd never have done that with my first but more relaxed now and just plan to play it by ear, like you if the fumes feel too much then I'll remove myself. Babies are very resilient really but of course you worry.

Thanks guys! I’m just going to have to try to chill out I think! Wink

Easier said than done to chill out but yes definitely try to, honestly you'll drive yourself mental during pregnancy - and beyond with all the things that could happen and stress isn't good for you either.

Chill and enjoy x
