Hi

Wondering if anyone could offer some advice ... I experienced what I’m assuming is acid reflux last night, I woke up chocking and couldn’t get my breath, I had the most painfully burning bile (sorry tmi) all in my mouth and down my throat.

My husband is away so it was just me in the house I was so scared I didn’t dare go back to sleep, felt like I would never catch my breath I had to stumble to the bathroom and lean over the toilet to try and spit it out. Is this normal in pregnancy? Rang my husband and he said he has had that in the past and it’s just reflux ... I’m not even sure if it’s pregnancy related, has anyone had anything similar and can offer some advice on how to manage or prevent it?

I’m 19 weeks pregnant and never even had heartburn before.

(Very aware of how dramatic I sound 😂 it was just so scary waking up and not being able to breathe , just a bit worried it’s going to happen again)

Yes - normal for pregnancy and one of my longest lasting memories of the whole thing. Something to do with the smoothing of muscle tissues due to hormones. Sleep a bit propped up and drink gaviscon before bed. It stops after birth.

Yep - I've had that! I googled it and came to the conclusion it was bile reflux.

What worked for me was cutting out foods that made it worse, not eating within a few hours of bed and not eating till I was full.

For me it was bread and pastry that made it worse.

On the plus side, it only happened maybe 2/3 time.

Sleeping sitting up will also help but I could never get comfy with that.

I suffered with it really badly in my first pregnancy.

The old wives tale that it heartburn means the baby will be born with lots of hair definitely came true though for me!

Get yourself some Zantac (ranitidine) from a pharmacy, you can buy it off the shelf. It's stronger than gaviscon and a whole lot better, but you need a prescription from the doctor if you're pregnant (I just bypassed the doctor Wink).

Ahh thanks ladies, I will definitely be buying some of that!

I’ve brought the pillows in from the spare room ready for tonight to prop myself up! Hopefully it won’t happen to often 😫

I had this in both pregnancies. Gaviscon helped a bit. I used to sleep with my head and shoulders elevated on several pillows, that helped too.

You have my sympathies, it's awful and a horrid way to wake up!
