And do you have any stretchmark avoidance tips?

Terribly shallow, I know...

I heard it was hereditary - not sure about that, but my mum never had any, my grandma didn't either with 4 kids - I haven't 'yet' but you never know!! (I have had them on other areas, btw - ie. not tummy, but boobs, back of calves for some reason... )
Hope you don't!

Hopeitwontbebig · 30/04/2007 09:37

I think mine appeared during 3rd trimester. Also I believe they're hereditory aswell. My Mum's got loads of stretch marks. Doesn't hurt to keep area moisturised. Good luck!

marieg76 · 30/04/2007 09:45

I have tended to get lots of stretchmarks in the past (from puberty onwards really). I have been advised that using Clarins Body Tonic Oil can help to avoid them. You smooth it on in the shower and it smells delicious. I'm not showing so much yet so can't tell you if it works but plenty of people have said that it's just brilliant.

EmilyandLola · 30/04/2007 10:06

37 weeks, and i got them bad!!!!

skidaddle · 30/04/2007 10:11

Think it might be related to your skin type as well (the paler your skin, the more likely you are to get them). I have dark skin and never got them but not sure if that's the reason.
The main way to avoid them is not to put on too much weight I think - but sometimes there's not much you can do about that!

fortyplus · 30/04/2007 10:13

I got them at 5 months when I was running around at my brother's wedding getting balloons to tie on his car. I got undressed that night and had purple tramlines round my bump!

MissGolightly · 30/04/2007 10:13

I had none right up until labour - then after my tummy went down, there they were! Was feeling really smug up to that point and slathering myself in cocoa-butter.

My mum had them too and loads of people have told me that there is NOTHING you can do. Boo.

MissGolightly · 30/04/2007 10:14

Oh and fwiw, I know several black and asian friends with bad stretchmarks. I think it is related to skin type but I don't think it's as simple as pale=stretchmarks

nappyaddict · 30/04/2007 10:17

i got them after birth too but didn't use any lotions or potions.

cupcakes · 30/04/2007 10:20

Around 7 months. I got dreadful ones with ds, all over the underside of the bump.
And then when pg with dd1 I got them all over the top of my bump.
With dd2 I used Clarins Body Treatment Oil and didn't get one!

Use it - it's soooo worth the money.

cupcakes · 30/04/2007 10:22

I don't use it in the shower, just smooth it on after a bath when skin is still damp.

BabyMadwithBump · 30/04/2007 10:57

I used coco butter with DS#1 didn't work very well, I used baby oil with DS#2 still didn't work very well, with this LO I'm useing "bio oil" hopeing it'll work better than the other two. I have stretchmarks on my Boobs, bum, belly, I never noticed I any apart from the odd ones untill I had the baby then I could see how many I had but still what can I do, apart from try and see!

RedFraggle · 30/04/2007 12:47

I got them almost instantly but apparently it is largely hereditory. My mum has them, and my sister and me. I got them on my breasts (underneath) in the first trimester. I didn't think I had any on my bump for ages, but it turns out they were all just in hiding under the bump where I couldn't see them! I got a right shock when I saw my bump in all it's glory in the mirror...
You can have a form of laser treatment to fade them afterwards if they are really bad I am not bothered about the ones on my tummy as they have faded well but I am very vain about the ones on my hips (still a purple colour) and am therefore considering this once I know my family is complete.

bananabump · 30/04/2007 12:54

I'm a lardybum anyway so have loads from putting on weight in my teens, which are all absolutely faded now and don't bother me. BUT...I see two new tiny red marks on the top of my stomach already (6 months pg) so I don't think I'll get away scot free.

I've heard bio oil is good too, I used to use it but my eczema doesn't like it, so now the bump just gets a quick rub of regular face moisturiser now and then, which is currently keeping it itch free!

pirategirl · 30/04/2007 12:56

midwife commented 'ooh you have no stetch marks' at about 30 weeks, then bam!! Iam typical pear shaped, about a stone overweight anyhow. Bump was collossal, but all water. My mum had em the same. I am dark skinned.

prob hereditary.

scorpio1 · 30/04/2007 12:57

i dont have any.i used vitamen e capsules - break them open and rub them on.it encourages elasticity.check with m/w first though, everyone is different. my mate used bio-oil and its done wonders.

Clarins has just bought out stretch mark cream,as have the body shop.both supposed to be good

satine · 30/04/2007 12:57

Wierdly, I didn't get any from my pregnancies but I have got old silvery ones on my thighs and hips from my apparently overnight development as a teenager! I don't like them, but they are so old now there's nothing I can do about them.

I did go crazy with the Palmers, though, whilst pregnant, just incase!

also i used creams right thru, and thought i would get away with it, which i did till about 30 weeks.
Maybe its cos its spring and have been looking more, when getting changed that I am thinking-god-they r hideous.

luckily the ones on my my boobs, have really gone down

RGPargy · 30/04/2007 13:49

They are hereditary and it's definitely down to your skin type. I got stretch marks whilst a teenager too, as well as from my DS1. They are now silver and i dont notice them that much (i've had 16 years of looking at them lol) and tbh, getting them again doesn't bother me that much.

My sister got them, my mum got them and i got them. My mum and I are red heads and my sister is dark haired.

It's deffo not down to hair colour!

maxbear · 30/04/2007 15:17

My sister had them quite badly, she was 18 at the time. I was really pleased to avoid them first time round with my dd who weighed 6lb 10 oz at birth and second time round I just assumed that I would not get any. Not so, about 3 or 4 days before I delivered I got some but then ds was 8lb 10.

loomer · 30/04/2007 15:22

I got them three weeks AFTER the birth. Was most miffed - nobody told me this could happen! Right through pregnancy I had been using an oil made by Decleor (can't remember what it's called), which my mum bought me as a gift, as it's rather pricey.

Of course I should have kept using it after I'd had the baby... grrrr!

PavlovtheCat · 30/04/2007 15:23

mine appeared about 2 months or so after I gave birth. I think it was to do with breastfeeding and eating like a horse!

EllieKthePA · 30/04/2007 15:24

nothing while pg but have one which appeared on my tummy a week after the birth

jdd0709 · 30/04/2007 15:32

Mine came a month or so after the birth at the bottom under where my bump would have been - I was really annoyed as thought I'd got away without them. They were gone again within the first year though.
