How do you know kicks are kicks? *may not want to read*

This post may be unsettling for some so apologies, I know the threads I have now read have made me feel quite uncomfortable.

Ive had regular midwife appointments and I’m very fortunate that the heartbeat is always strong I’ve started feeling movements over the last few weeks. So I’m very grateful to be able to say things seem ok with my pregnancy so far.

I’ve just found some threads where people have lost their baby and yet still felt movements even after there was no heartbeat found, so they had no idea there was anything wrong because of the usual indicators that all is well.

My movement does feel more like pressure and occasional “thud” kicks, but reading this has made me feel really uneasy...

I’m so sorry if anyone has experienced this, but if anyone has any knowledge of it please could you advise if they were any different at all to healthy normal kicks? I just don’t know how common this is or how to distinguish to tell if the baby is ok?

Can you link these threads?

Sounds appalling, those poor women.

As with many things in pregnancy, I think the answer may be that you can never know for sure. For your own mental health and the health of your baby you have to try and ignore these intrusive thoughts. Worrying won’t make it any less/more likely.

It must just be absolutely awful, especially after they have been told and have to wait for medical intervention :(

It’s not on mumsnet but if you google movements after no heartbeat it’s on other forums. I don’t want to go back to the sites

Sorry posted to soon - I was going to delete that as I have started a thread on here about it, so it’s just as bad as going back to the sites... but if you google that it’s on other forums.

You mean like phantom limb syndrome? But that would only happen if you knew for sure that the baby was no longer alive, because it would be your subconscious filling the gap.

ChippedVarnish · 02/02/2018 22:15

I’m not sure Fenella, they are saying they could feel the baby the whole time before and after. I really don’t know anything about it, I just saw it and wondered what the difference was in the feeling.

I do understand totally that we shouldn’t be thinking this and as mentioned, there’s nothing you could do either way and you have to trust your instinct to a point

Not really phantom limb but actual movements that their partners can also feel

I've never read about anything like this to be honest...and I'm a terrible worrier.

Stay away from Google 😊

Same here! It was weird how it came up too, I think I was just looking for what normal movements would be around this time!

I worried about the same thing when I was pregnant with DD.
I read similar on some site or another, about the foetus moving in the amniotic fluid even after it had been lost.
But I am a massive worrier. And every time I heard DD’s heartbeat at an appointment, or saw a scan I breathed a sigh of relief. Until she was with us, I couldn’t quite relax.

If you feel uneasy there is no harm in getting checked out at the maternity centre.

CL1982 · 03/02/2018 19:56

I honestly don't believe that's a thing actually. You can clearly feel the baby move especially in later pregnancy.

ChippedVarnish · 03/02/2018 22:02

CL this is what I’m hoping. Especially if You are lying still and can feel a kick on your hand or something. I know they change positions too so some days movements feel different
