Is fresh pineapple OK in pregnancy or not?

one of my colleagues is about 20 weeks pg, she always loved pineapple but atm she seems to be having loads of it. I'm sure I've read it can cause miscarriage but is this actually true? I don't want to be an interfering bag if not.

myth

I remember being told that lots of fresh pineapple near the end of pregnancy can bring on labour, but it is probably an old wives tale too

Fresh pineapple does contain an enzyme called bromelain (?sp) which is reputed to soften the cervix and therefore perhaps help bring on labour.

I wouldn't worry too much, though. Apparently your friend would have to be eating around 7 or 8 whole (and I mean the core, as well!) pineapples a day for there to be any chance of it having an effect.

She's more likely to get the runs

Snaf, I wouldn't put it past her tbh! She luurves the stuff!

um, no - sounds a bit like bollocks to me.

If it was a problem we would be told in that huge list of brie and pate and stuff.

Will make her tonuge hurt though.

I did try eating my own body weight in fresh pineapple when DS1 was late (40 + 10) and I can say that it had no effect whatsoever. So eat away.

confusedandignorant · 01/05/2007 10:19

bromelain is an enzyme and therefore a protein so very unlikely to be absorbed and get anywhere near there cervix (if eaten)

There is an old wives tale that says pineapple is good for bruises if you eat they go in a week otherwise they will last for seven days

Total old wives tale, myth, etc so don't worry, there's not a drop of truth in this. Unless someone is using a pineapple as a weapon to attack someone else with, it's quite an innocent fruit! Pineapple will not make anyone miscarry and the vitamin c and fibre in it are fab for your friend, especially during pregnancy, so let her keep munching on pineapple to her heart's content!
