Booking appointment

Hi everyone, this is my first pregnancy so I'm a little lost and was hoping someone could help. My midwife rang this morning and left a message with a date for my 8 week booking appointment. She mentioned for me to fill in sections of my booking form in advance...the problem is the doctors didn't give me anything to fill in. Just a referral form an Emma's diary, a pack with some freebie samples in and a load of info about screening. I called the surgery to ask if I can pick up my booking forms to fill in and they had no idea what they were or what I was talking about! So can you tell me, did you get forms to fill in advance or have I got myself confused? (I'm in wales so not sure if it's different elsewhere?)

I self referred by email and was emailed booking forms.
It was basically health/medical history/screening option stuff and we went over all of it in the actual appointment anyway as she explained it and put it all in my maternity notes/on the computer so wasn't totally sure the point in giving it to me before!

Might be worth calling the midwife to ask if you're confused? I doubt it'll be a problem though.

Thanks for replying, I think it's all different depending on where you live which makes. I had to fill in a referral form and the midwife called me and left a message with appointment details. Unfortunately she is only in the surgery half a day a week and there is no way of contacting her directly so a little hard to get a hold of. I guess I can just tell her when I get to my appointment that the surgery hasn't given me anything in advance!

Sorry that was supposed to say which makes it all the more confusing!

I'm in Wales (ABM Health Board). I wasn't given anything in advance but my booking appointment was split in two, so they asked me to fill in lots of the pages of the book before the second half of the appointment.

GnTplease · 01/02/2018 15:21

@Spam88 ah ok I've not heard of that happening but would make sense!

I'm not in Wales but I recently had my booking appt.
When I got there they gave me a bunch of forms to fill in then told me that they are my maternity notes and I have to take them to every appt.

You will get given everything when you get there.
Also, if you don't understand something, ask them
Loads of it meant nothing to me (my first too) and I just left feeling confused and overwhelmed. So please ask if you are not sure.

GnTplease · 01/02/2018 15:58

@Kitcat159 oh perfect thank you! I will definitely ask lots of questions...it does feel like everyone just assumes you know stuff when actually I've never done this before and as I'm not telling friends etc till I've had my scan I have nobody to ask! Did you have bloods taken at yours? Or is that at the scan?

Oh totally. Everyone talks in abbreviations. I said it's my first and I don't know what I'm doing at least 6 times in my booking appt.

When you get there they give you a big green folder and tell you to fill it in.
A handful of other forms
Do a pee sample
Then you go in and talk to midwife. They do height and weight and ask you all the questions to already answered in the forms
Then you go to pathology and get bloods done
Then go back and book your scan in.

It's all easy just some things don't make sense at first.

My midwife was pretty good at explaining things I have to say!

Went through all the forms I'd brought and put stuff on the computer, got my notes (yellow book rather than a green folder where I am!).
I had height/weight/CO2/blood pressure/urine test/bloods taken all by the midwife at the appointment, no going between places (I'm with community midwifes based in my GP surgery). Booked my 16 week appointment in at the end.

Can't remember if she specifically mentioned my scan but my appointment letter for it turned up a week later and I had specific screening bloods again there (and booked my 20 week scan then too).

I think there is quite a lot of variation between procedures but they should explain that to you, at the beginning of your notes when you get them there should be a rough timetable of appointments and contact details!

GnTplease · 01/02/2018 16:39

Thanks for all the info everyone. I like to be prepared and know what to expect - especially with blood tests as I'm not a fan and tend to faint so will make sure to eat in advance!

Hi i had my appointment today. They took bloods, urine, hight, weight, blood pressure and co2.
Everything they asked was put onto the computer and all my notes are online.
They asked me lot's of questions about my health, lifestyle and family history (they asked my boyfriend too.)
Then they said they'll send off for a faster scan as they said am 14 weeks :/ they also gave me a green folder to bring to appointment. Hope everything goes well for you and congratulations

Spam88 · 01/02/2018 17:44

My bloods were taken when I went for my scan, so I guess it depends where you are.

GnTplease · 01/02/2018 17:50

@K9pal7 thanks lovely you too!

@GnTplease it's okay. Its not so scary as i thought it might be. Just all the questions 🤦‍♀️ my head felt like it was going to explode😂 so hard to think about family health problems when you don't really know and feel under pressure to get it right
