Making a homemade pizza for tea tonight and I just wondered, if I put parma ham on it but then it will obviously go in the oven, is this safe to eat? Avoided so far but I wasn't sure on the guidelines for cured meats??

In fact, current NHS guidance is that you can eat uncooked cured meats if you freeze them for at least 4 days first to kill any parasites (toxoplasmosis)

Ooh fabulous! Like I say have just avoided them until now (nearly 20 weeks) and did with my first, I was hoping that cooking them would kill off any potential bacteria though!

Personally, I've always eaten it uncooked, so I'm sure it's perfectly fine cooked as really anything is but liver.

Apparently if it's got listeria on the surface it'll be horribly and noticeably slimy so if it looks, smells and tastes normal, it'll not have the risk of listeria.
For piece of mind, worth freezing or cooking though!

Spam88 · 01/02/2018 17:55

I think the risk from meat is toxoplasmosis not listeria?

Pittcuecothecookbook · 01/02/2018 18:01

I read it was listeria but that was some weeks ago now. Haven't Googled it recently as a lot more relaxed in my second trimester

The nhs website says toxoplasmosis 🤔 but anyway yeah, absolutely fine if it's cooked.

Pittcuecothecookbook · 01/02/2018 18:51

I thought toxoplasmosis was undercooked meat/fish but I'm no expert!

dementedpixie · 01/02/2018 18:56

Cured meats aren't cooked so that's why toxoplasmosis could be an issue. If you check the link I posted earlier then it says fine if cooked or frozen for a few days
