Please can someone tell me the difference and the pros and cons of each. Clearly a FTM and I just can't figure it out!

TIA

Three-wheelers are a PITA to bump up kerbs and stairs unless you turn around.

HandbagFan · 31/01/2018 08:47

I’ve only had 4 wheelers but for the same reason given above - getting up and down curbs!

PandaCat · 31/01/2018 08:51

I only used 4 wheelers with DD1 and have got a 4 wheeler (joie chrome) this time to use too, so can't really help on the differences but I've never had a problem with 4 wheels.

AprilShowers16 · 31/01/2018 08:53

I have a three wheeler (baby jogger gt) and find it really easy and light to manoeuvre one handed (especially up and down curbs)

megletthesecond · 31/01/2018 08:57

3 wheelers are much easier to push and steer, even one handed. Mine would swivel on a sixpence (almost).
I sometimes push a friends icandy and can't believe how hard it is.

INeedNewShoes · 31/01/2018 09:02

I agree re being surprised about how resistant the icandy is to manoeuvre, as is the silvercross.

My 4 wheeled Jane Epic just swivels almost on the spot one handed. Lots of people have commented on how easy it is to push. On a woodland walk with the antenatal group our pushchair handled tree roots etc. much more readily, but I did specifically want an all terrain pushchair. It just seems lighter to push somehow.

I think it largely depends on your other priorities for a pram. I'm happy to be corrected on this but with the exception of the Phil & Teds Dot I think most three-wheelers don't allow you to turn the seat to face the parent (unless you've clipped in a car seat or carrycot).

My priorities at first were a high seat (I'm 6' and a baby in a Maclaren or a Bugaboo Bee is miles away from me!) and parent-facing. We had a Joolz Day from birth and bought a cheap three-wheeler stroller when DD was 18 months.

I had a Silver Cross 4 wheeler and hated it, too heavy and wouldn’t manoeuvre at all. Once baby was bigger got a 4 wheeler Cosatto lite and loved it. I then got a three wheeler Quinny Moodd (you can get attachment to make it a 4 wheeler and it is either parent or forward facing) and it is much easier on getting up and down curbs and manoeuvring which I think is part down to the air tyres. I now have a Phil and Teds sport double buggy 3 wheeler and this is a doddle too to get around with - I have steps leading to my front door and live in a village with high curbs, bumps, steep hills. My preference with the 3 wheelers I have tried have been air tyres and one handle bar (as opposed to two handles to hold) but not sure it would matter how many wheels there were...

RosieCotton · 31/01/2018 13:35

I only have 4 wheel prams now. I had a quinny zapp with my first born and a strong gust of wind ripped it out of my hands and turned over. I'll never use a 3 wheel again

bonzo77 · 31/01/2018 13:47

I’ve had a 3 wheeler Baby jogger and the same one with 4 wheels. So a good comparison. The 4 wheeler is far superior with kerbs and bumps. I had a crash with DS3 in the 3 wheeler trying to get him down a High kerb with one hand while holding on to DS2’s hand. Was very scary. Neither pushes as nicely as my ancient bugaboo bee (4 wheels). The Phil and teds I had as a tandem was 3 wheels and so irritating that I ended up using a single plus buggy board and sling instead.

I have the icandy strawberry and I really like it. It feels really sturdy and it's not too heavy, is great for walks in the park and has a brilliant sized basket (best I've found). Flip side is the seat is small and my 20 month old no longer fits so I've bought a Maclaren.

I had a baby jogger city mini which is raved about on Mumsnet but sold it after a month as I didn't like it at all. I found it too long to fit on buses well and quite unstable. Kerbs weren't easy! Also the basket is really awkward and badly designed. I did like the seat size though and would consider getting the four wheel version.

BunnyTeapot · 31/01/2018 17:53

Thank you all I was edging towards 4 wheel but didn't really know what the difference was. Definitely seems the better options for curbs etc will have a look around.

I found that the 3 wheeler Cosatto that I borrowed had the tendency to tip backwards on the bus. Admittedly the 4 wheeler that I use now has tipped back on the bus too, but nowhere near as often as the 3 wheeler.
