I'm a first time mum currently 6 weeks 4 days along I found out on the 22/1 that I was pregnant had done some tests as missed period and came back positive.

So me being clueless I rang my doctors and the receptionist asked me what seemed to be the problem and I explained that I just have some positive tests ect, and she asked age date of birth and last date of period and told me she will get paperwork and she would put me on hold for abit, then she came back at me saying with that it's too early to get a accurate positive and told me I have to wait, I was abit speechless as I had the tests in front of me, well anyway we said our goodbyes and I left my phone on the kitchen side still on speaker and I heard her saying about the girl she was just talking to was 'being daft'

I hung up it hurt my feelings abit as I don't really know what im doing and feel like no one will see me. I took a digital later that day and it came back pregnant 🤰

Can anyone advise me on what to do next as I don't want to do anything daft

When was your last period? It doesn’t rrally matter as a positive test is rarely wrong. I would ring back again and hopefully get a different receptionist. Tell them you are pregnant and need to arrange a booking in appointment. I’m not sure how it works where you are but in my area we have to see the GP to confirm the test. Then GP sends referral to the maternity hospital

Woodchuck9 · 31/01/2018 00:33

@DonnyAndVladSittingInATree my last period was 16/12/2017 tests I took are linked

Congratulations! You’re not daft at all.

With my first 15 years ago, I didn’t do a home test, I did one at the doctors. When the results came in, they phoned me, and said the result was positive.

I said, what does that mean, yes or no, am I pregnant or not...she said positive means yes, so you’re pregnant. Now that was daft Grin

Anyways. Yes you can tell that early on. If you’re in the UK you need a booking in appointment with the midwife around 8-10 weeks. Then they’ll book you in for a hospital scan at 12 weeks.

Come back again and agin for advice on mumsnet. Wish I’d had this years ago Smile

Woodchuck9 · 31/01/2018 00:39

@gluteustothemaximus thank you yeah I'm in the uk so I'll probably ring again at some point thank you for the reassurance:)

Rubbish! I got a positive digital test saying Pregnant 1-2 weeks. Called Doctors next day. Saw GP that day. Got my Emma's Diary pack that day from Doctor's receptionist and had my Midwife call me the next day for an Appointment! This was all before 3 weeks after conception

MotherofaSurvivor · 31/01/2018 00:48

You need to complain about that Receptionist!

Congratulations by the way x

weekfour · 31/01/2018 00:48

Where I live you just ring the midwife to arrange direct. No need to see GP. I did though (I didn’t know at the time). I said I’ve done a test, he asked how many, I said 4, he said that means you’re pregnant and laughed. If you know where the midwives work (it’s a children’s centre here) ring there and they’ll book you in.

gluteustothemaximus · 31/01/2018 00:51

No problem. Are you taking any folic acid yet?

Definitely ring soon, as midwife appointments are quickly booked up (round here anyway). You’re already nearly 7 weeks, so can see midwife from 8 weeks for booking in.

How exciting! Smile

Woodchuck9 · 31/01/2018 00:56

@gluteustothemaximus I'm taking pregnancy care vitamins I got from our shops that has 400mg folic acid, I'll ring that in the morning x

Id make a complaint to your local health board about that receptionist what an unprofesional bitch! You don't have to tell receptionists why you want an appointment and they certainly shouldn't be like that x

pregz · 31/01/2018 01:01

My experience was the exact same when I first phoned my doctors office, receptionist told me there was "nothing they could do" until I was at least 10 weeks gone , being totally naive I waited to be then told I was too late and would have to contact my local hospital directly and "hope they can work something out for you" I ended up making a doctors appointment under a fake reason and broke down to my doctor because I was scared , first time mum and really had no idea what to do.

My doctor was furious I had been told this by receptionists, offered blood work for tests that day and booked me in with a midwife the next day . Please don't wait, phone again and demand a referral for a midwife be put through. I'm now 37 weeks and my care has been amazing by everyone I've seen so don't let this one experience put you off or make you nervous to start with like it did me Smile

SparkleFizz · 31/01/2018 01:01

Congratulations!

6 weeks and 4 days is not too early to get an accurate positive result. I had my last pregnancy confirmed at my GP surgery earlier than that (the resulting baby is now 14 months old).

What to do about getting booked in with midwives varies between areas. Where I am, you have to get the pregnancy confirmed at the GP surgery, usually by a nurse, and then the surgery refer you to the midwives. As pp says, booking in appointments are usually around 8-10 weeks, and first scan at 12 weeks.

The GP surgery should be the best people to advise about how to get registered with midwives where you live. I’d suggest calling again, saying you’re pregnant, can they tell you how to register with the midwife for a booking in appointment. If they say that 6 weeks is too early to make an appointment, ask them how far along you need to be before they’ll let you make an appointment.

Hope you have better luck with the receptionists next time you call. And remember, you’re not daft! If anyone’s daft, it’s the receptionist for not giving you better information about how your GP surgery deals with newly pregnant patients.

NoIdeaWhatToSay · 31/01/2018 08:27

That's terrible care! 6wks 4days is not too early, it's about right! The receptionist should not be interfering with your medical care, you need to complain about her ASAP. In my area you phone to see a dr and then they either let you see a dr who will book you in with the midwife or the receptionist will book you in with the midwife. It's also very busy in my area so we're advised not to wait - scans and checks need to be done on specific timescales.

Congratulations! And I hope you manage to get through to the care you need soon.

ClareB83 · 31/01/2018 08:41

In my area you just google 'midwife self referral' and the trust name and you di it yourself online. Nothing to do with your GP. So you could do a little check online for your area too.

user1493413286 · 31/01/2018 08:49

Congratulations!
The receptiontionist is ridiculous; I found out at 5 weeks and no one said that. In some areas the midwife wants to see you by 7-9 weeks so the receptionist makes no sense.
If you’re in the uk I’d look online and call your local hospital antenatal team as I went to the gp and all she did was give me the number to self refer to the midwife so was a waste of time anyway.

Woodchuck9 · 31/01/2018 11:15

UPDATE --

I rang the doctors this morning they filled out the documents over the phone and they said I got to wait for the midwife (I'm assuming they are referring me) to ring me any time between 3 weeks and 5 weeks time I should have a phone call that would make me anything between nearly 10 weeks and nearly 12 weeks along

Does that sound right? Confused

OP posts:
ClareB83 · 31/01/2018 11:18

Not really. You normally meet with your midwife face to face at around 10 weeks.

greenbeansqueen · 31/01/2018 11:24

That receptionist is the daft, and rude one! I had a positive test at 15 days both times! Seems she is being patronising as you're younger.
You should see the midwife asap, they can give you good advice about pregnancy health. If they're saying around 3-5 weeks then perhaps there's a waiting list BUT if you have ANY concerns about yourself or baby in the meantime make a GP appt.
Anomaly scan usually happens around 18-20 weeks unless there's a reason to have it earlier - the NHS website has good ante-natal advice & timings by the way.

Ninjamilo · 31/01/2018 11:58

That would be right where I am - I was over 10 weeks when I spoke to a midwife for the first time. Still had my scan on time

MommaVixen · 31/01/2018 13:01

Its not nice to overhear something like that. Especially from them.
Im a first time mum as well.
Its not daft, if its come back positive and you missed your last period, most likely you are Smile
I did 3 clear blue tests that ALL came back negative. Had a blood test done and due to give birth in 3 weeks 😂
Just hang on for another week as obviously theyre not being very helpful right now and good luck ☺

gluteustothemaximus · 31/01/2018 16:45

that would make me anything between nearly 10 weeks and nearly 12 weeks along

Booking in really should be done at 8-10 weeks so you get the scan in time.

I really wish receptionists weren't like this. They give you basic info and leave you with questions you feel silly asking.

I just remember phoning up with dc3 and asking for a booking in appointment with the midwife, and I told them when I would be 8 weeks. She was fully booked up until 10 weeks, so I had to wait until then.

Passmethecakeplease · 31/01/2018 17:00

That was extremely rude of the receptionist, just because she works there and knows how it all works doesn't mean everyone else does. She's also wrong, it's not too early to get a positive result. The only thing she could have meant is that it's too early to book you in but that's something different.

Up to you but I would be inclined to complain about the receptionist.

Might also be worth checking to see if you can self refer so you don't have to deal with her again any time soon.

Aries456 · 31/01/2018 19:07

First, massive congratulations!!
Second, complain about her! I had a similar thing. I was about 7 months pregnant and needed an appointment for something pregnancy related (I don't remember now) and every day I called first thing as the lines opened and got told all appointments were gone and call again tomorrow. On the 4tg day i got slightly shrill asking what i was supposed to do then and I got passed over and heard her refer to me as "hysterical woman". Not at all impressed!!
Third, make sure you chase up your appointment at 3 weeks. Probably get one fine but I have also been left twiddling my thumbs expecting an NHS referral for something else and then found out it had been lost/ not made! Even recently I found my baby wasn't registered with the HV here after I moved even though I had registered her with GP. So do check and chase!!
