I saw this online yesterday. I did wonder a couple of weeks ago about the safety of putting a laptop on my lap because of the wi fi signal, any danger to baby???? To be fair it doesn't mention anything about not using whilst pregnant. But was just interested to see what others thought.

I'm sure there's no risk in this. Wi fi signals are all around us at all times and it doesn't make it any more or less unsafe if the lap top is on your lap. These sort of news articles are very sensationalist and use pseudoscience to back it up. The article even says it "should be monitored until research into potential health risks is completed". That's hardly newsworthy in my opinion or something to get worked up about. These departments are still researching risks with mobile phones and other types of equipment that use radio waves of various sorts and to date there's simply no evidence of any negative problems. Personally I think these sort of news reports preys on people's fears of "new fangled" gadgets and have no real backing to support any of these worries or claims. I bet when people started using electricity and phones there were people who were sure everyone would die from these "suspect" things. Don't worry, I'm sure it's fine and that there's no risk to baby

Thanks for these posts! I heard this on the news yesterday and have been getting myself into a state of total worry!!!! Obviosuly we dont know, but your repsonse, Lemmiwinks, is very rational and reassuring! (And I have bought myself a mouse today anyway!)

I just asumed that this was a rehash of the research which was done in the early 1990's about monitors in offices causing problems. But again i don't think anythink was proved one way or the other.

lazycat · 29/04/2007 20:31

I can believe how irresponsible these kind of stories are - I get so angry every time I see a story about health dangers that has no evidence to back it up, or a 'cure' that hasn't been proven to work.

Oh no this report has got me so worried. I had a mmc 2 weeks ago and i spend most of my days with my laptop on my lap. And it has wi-fi!! Please dont tell me that i may have caused my baby to die

Lemmiwinks · 29/04/2007 21:48

missnatalie, I'm very sorry for your loss . However, I can assure you that your laptop had absolutely nothing to do with what happened.. I sincerely hope you are not seriously thinking there could possibly be any connection b/c there simply is not so please don't even think that for a moment.

missnatalie · 29/04/2007 22:35

Hi Lemmiwinks,

Even before i read that report i wondered if there could have been any connection. Not because of the Wi-Fi but because of the heat coming from underneath the laptop. After the mc i read that having a high temp or raising you body temp can cause mc.

After having another read of that report i think its ridiculos (sp) and shocking that someone would publish a report like that without any evidence to back it up.

I think that maybe im just looking for something to blame fore the mc.

Hi Lemmiwinks, thank you so much for your posts. I did think/hope that it was a bit extreme. Was just interested to get other's opinions.

MissNatalie, I totally totally agree with Lemmiwinks. I'm really sorry to hear about your MMC, that's just awful for you. BUT YOU MUSTN'T BLAME YOURSELF. I had one many years ago, and I do understand the thought processes you go through, why, what was wrong, was it something I did....? But to reassure you, my first pregnancy ended in MC, and I now have two strapping lads and am pregnant with DC3. I wish you the very best of luck

No problem ! Glad to give my opinion actually b/c these sort of stories really wind me up. I think that we all read a news article from time to time that makes you panic when it's a topic that you are worried about b/c it seems relevant to you at that time. It's hard to keep it into perspective when that happens. Unfortunately, the success of news stories like this one is the fact that it will instill people with fear and hence my point about it being very sensationalist and having nothing to do with facts or reality.

You are right, missnatalie, it's very irresponsible when they do these sort of "reports" but ethics and journalism rarely go hand in hand, sadly. It's normal to look to place blame on someone or something when things like that happen, but please don't blame yourself in any way b/c it's nothing that you did that caused the mmc. Wishing you lots of good things for the future!
