Anyone’s waters go in bits rather than all at once?

Posted few days ago about my plug coming away. Midwife on the phone wasn’t exactly the most helpful or sympathetic (yes, I know they know what they’re talking about but when you’re upset and in pain you don’t always want to hear you’re fine 😂) when I called last night because I was having fairly bad cramping pains on and off for over 12 hours.

She said I could continue like that for a couple of weeks and it wouldn’t be a concern unless I had ‘any loss down below’, meaning blood or my waters going. But I think my waters have started to go in small goes?

I mean, if it’s not my waters going very slowly, I apparently have no bladder control 😂 and it doesn’t smell like pee. Should I phone back? Or go to work and see how things continue?

Mine went all at once. So no advice other than call again.

TheHappyRedDragon · 29/01/2018 13:41

Hindwaters go gradually over a long time, like a trickle as if you are constantly weeing yourself.
Forewaters go in a big gush.

I’d give your hospital a call and say you are coming in to be checked out. Yes, midwives know what they are talking about but often the overlook things because they are busy and understaffed.

Good luck.

MonaTheMoaner · 29/01/2018 13:43

Mine did. I didn’t have a gush at all. I was walking around the ward post-induction and it was just dribbling. The midwife told me I was urinating and when I told her I wasn’t she didn’t believe me. It was only when I put a sanitary towel on and it filled up that she actually checked and realised they had gone and I was 4cm dilated.

It was constant though, a constant trickle rather than stopping and starting.

I would call them back as that does sound like your waters. My hind waters went in a slow drip drip and I went in and out of the Labour unit a few times until they took me in to be induced. While I was waiting I went into full labour without anyone noticing until a midwife examined me and touched the baby’s head!

Grimmfebruary · 29/01/2018 13:46

Well they’ve been going in bits as far as I’m concerned, I’ve just had a pain in my back, like an ache, stood up and ‘leaked’ enough fluid to notice. Accompanied by a very strong cramp style pain. I definitely haven’t wet myself. I also have a pad on.

Would I ring delivery suite? Or community midwife for advice?

Sorry for tmi ladies!

Ring the pregnancy ward (the one you’d ring to go in for monitoring). They should be able to check you out there. Bring the pad you have on too.

Grimmfebruary · 29/01/2018 13:51

Waiting to see if I get one more really bad pain then I’m going to ring. Don’t want to be the ‘oh I’ve had 2 sharp pains and a bit water’ person 😂

If the water keeps going, regardless of pain, ring and go in. If it’s your full waters it can lead to infection without intervention. How many weeks are you?

Grimmfebruary · 29/01/2018 14:01

38+1. Yeah im pretty sure they’re going like. I’m going to give the hospital a ring now.

I had a leak! 35 weeks, thought I was leaking urine, went to work as normal. DH eventually bagged me enough to go and get checked, didn’t even take my bag. Was admitted and induced as i’d been leaking for more than 24 hours (this was not in the UK). DS1 was born 12 hours later.

If you’re leaking then i’d get it checked.

Mine were broken in hospital and ‘went’, or so I thought.... and then continued going at regular intervals for at least the next hour. Definitely err on the side of caution.

MrsCharlesBrandon · 29/01/2018 14:52

Mine dripped for 4 days with DD2. I was checked on day 1, told that "95% of women go into labour naturally within 72 hours". Not me! Eventually induced on the drip 6 days later only to find that it was just my hind waters that had gone.
MW broke the forewaters, DD2 arrived 4 hours later.
Good luck OP!

Go to the hospital, there is a simple test they can do for amniotic fluid. They didn't tell me this until 3 days too late and my dc ended up in scbu for a week because my waters were infected.

Passmethecakeplease · 29/01/2018 15:38

Waters can go in bits because the baby's head can sometimes act as a bit of a plug, so to speak, so it only comes out when baby moves his/her head.

If you think it could be your waters I would ask to be checked over.

He arrived! I got to the hospital at 9cm dilated, pushing took forever but he’s here :)

Wow talk about a fast moving thread! Congratulations!

BecomingAdultly · 30/01/2018 02:51

Congratulations OP!!! Good luck to you and your new addition.

Have you already named him? For some reason I want to suggest the name Nigel. I have no idea why, can't say I've met a Nigel under 40 but it's randomly popped into my head.

Think he should be a Nigel ;)

iggleypiggly · 30/01/2018 03:29

Wow!!! You were right! Congratulations Flowers

Bowerbird5 · 30/01/2018 03:37

Ahh! Congratulations. Bet they got a shock when you arrived at 9cm!

Enjoy those cuddles.

Grimmfebruary · 30/01/2018 05:14

Everyone was surprised, especially when I ended up pushing for 4 hours and ended up with an episiotomy. He’s doing fine though! Very hiccupy but fine :)
