Enlarged bladder

I had my 12 week scan last week. But the baby was measuring only around 11 weeks so they were unable to proceed with the scan. However, there was a blob of fluid around the bladder area which the lady there said was unusually large. She wasn't sure if it was the bladder or something else so she asked me to go back on Tuesday to be seen by a consultant.

I've been googling (bad idea, I know!) and I've worked myself up into a state. Has anybody on here had a similar experience and anything positive to tell me? Thank you.

Here's a picture of the scan - I've circled the unusual fluid area.

I'm sorry, I have no knowledge to help with your problem.
But I'm wondering what you mean by unable to proceed? Lots of 12 week scans turn out to be the wrong date, the procedure doesn't usually change.
I hope you find some good advice soon. Flowers

I know and that is what worries me too. The lady said the baby needs to be at least 45mm and this one was measuring only 43.5mm and she also wanted me to be seen by a consultant. I'm scared it's bad news and she didn't want to do anything then and so gave me this excuse. I don't know. My mind is in overdrive and I'm thinking of all the worst case scenarios. And like I said, google isn't helping. She said there sometimes is fluid buildup if the bladder is full but this looked abnormally large. So she wasn't sure if it was the bladder or something else.

I think they only do dating scans from 11+5 or something like that. So if you're measuring less than that it's normal to call you back for a later dating scan.

Sorry I can't help with the bladder question tho.

I know exactly how you feel and don't worry! I went for my scan at 12 weeks and she left the room for ages saying she had to speak to a colleague - my mind was racing till she came back and said the bladder was measuring large so I'd have o go back in 2 weeks to see a consultant. I googled, just like you - it's impossible not too! I was reading horror stories and couldn't sleep for 2 weeks.
Anyway the consultant was doing the scan and within literally 10 seconds had told me that the baby must of just needed to pee because it was back to a normal size.
Honestly don't worry, I know its so hard but it'll be absolutely fine. Let me know how you get on when you go xx

Thanks, Dino.

That's similar to what happened at my appointment. She initially said I'd have to come back in two weeks but then disappeared for a while and came back and asked me to come on Tuesday. Which got me really worried.

Luckily, I'll only have to wait till tomorrow morning. I'll update when it's done.

Sorry I posted twice as I was desperate to reassure you! My little boy is 1 next Monday yet I still remember the absolute panic and anxiety I felt at the time.
I'll be hinking of you but you and your wee babe will be fine!!! x

Thank you! And happy birthday to your little one! xx

I had my scan and unfortunately it isn't great news. The bladder is still very enlarged and they've referred me to the fetal clinic at the nearest big hospital. I'll just have to wait and see what happens next. :(

Oh love I'm sorry, hopefully it isn't anything to worry about and they can put your mind at rest. Lots of love xxx

Sorry to hear that OP, that must be really stressful for you to hear.
Have they been able to tell you anything about what it could be? I've never heard of this before and I really hope it ends up being something of nothing! Thanks

They said it could be signs of posterior urethral valve (PUV) which I've now read affects 1 in 8000 male babies. And oh I was told today that it is a boy.

The consultant said he's seen cases where the pressure causes the bladder to relieve itself but sometimes when it doesn't, the bladder obstructs the development of the kidneys which isn't great for the baby. There might be treatment options but I'll need to see a specialist to see what to do next. The consultant did also mutter something about a termination but I ignored him. I'm hoping against hope that by the next time I'm seen, the bladder has magically emptied. 🤞

I really hope it has too OP, a PP has said that happened with them so fingers crossed that will be the case for you 🤞🏻
