Hi all. Got my BFP yesterday and am about 4.5 weeks (working from last period date). The soonest I can pre-book a routine appointment is the 8th Feb, is that ok or should I call to get a sooner one?
Thank you!

I found out at 3.5 and didn’t see midwife till 8 weeks, think it depends on area but no gp appointment was necessary in my area 🙂

Quartz2208 · 28/01/2018 17:50

8th Feb is fine - they will just take your details and connect you to the midwife service who will see you around 8-10 weeks and then a scan at 12 weeks

thepatchworkcat · 28/01/2018 17:53

Yes that’s fine, I think I saw the midwife at 8 or 9 weeks for the initial appointment. You might not even need to see the GP though, you don’t at my practice so that’s worth checking.

bringonthesunn · 28/01/2018 18:03

You don't need to see GP in most areas, they don't confirm the pregnancy or anything.
Just ask receptionist fur midwife details and get yourself booked in with them

PumpkinPatch000 · 28/01/2018 18:26

I rang my doctor to see what they wanted me to do and they wanted me to pop in for an appointment. That was at 4-5 weeks.

FayJay · 28/01/2018 18:39

In most areas you don’t need to see a GP at all. Home tests are so good these days they generally just take your word for it and don’t do their own pg test to confirm or anything. I would phone your practice back, explain you’ve just found out you are pg and ask what the procedure is. Where I live they would just book you straight in with a midwife around 8-10 weeks.

Thank you all! First time pregnant if you couldn't tell Confused!

No GP visit required, ask drs reception how to self refer to mid wives.

Passmethecakeplease · 28/01/2018 20:28

I self referred online.

Google the name of your NHS trust, e.g. mid essex, and maternity self referral. That's what I did and I just filled in a form, emailed it and got an appointment with a midwife for around the 8 week mark for my booking appointment.

ThorsMistress · 28/01/2018 20:52

I called my GP when I found out around 4 weeks. I have my midwife appointment for the 15th feb when I’ll be around 9 weeks (going by my dates)

Lj8893 · 28/01/2018 20:59

In my trust you phone the maternity unit direct (gp surgery can give you number) and book your booking appointment (usually around 8-10 weeks).

Lifeofpies · 28/01/2018 22:19

Most GPs won’t want to see you. To check I would just call and ask the receptionist whether you need to self refer and if so what number and when. In my trust you call the midwife team at 7 weeks and arrange a booking in appt, which they do at 9-10 weeks (earlier elsewhere).

awankstainonhumanity · 28/01/2018 22:38

Do you need to see the GP? If you call your surgery and ask "I'm pregnant, do I need to see a GP or can I self refer to the midwife?", you may find you don't need to see the GP at all.

katiegd · 28/01/2018 22:45

In some areas you do have to see the GP to formally register that you're pregnant and be referred for the 12 week scan, so it's worth checking what the procedure is where you are. It varies massively between different trusts.
