Time off work for morning sickness?

Hi all!
I'm new to mumsnet and I'm 8 weeks pg with my first! I was wondering if anyone had ever got a sicknote for morning sickness? Since about week 6 of my pregnancy I have been really suffering with this, vomiting morning, noon and night...although I am managing to eat I'm eating less than half of the amount which i would normally consume on a daily basis - which worries me that the baby is not getting enough nutrition! I'm really tired too and seem to be suffering with restless leg syndrome on a night time which is driving me up the wall! I'm really considering asking the Dr for a sicknote but I'm unsure if they would even give me one for this? Also I'm in a bit of a predicament here, because I'm employed as a dental technology student, and I'm almost coming to the end of a 3 year programme (I finish in may) I also have to travel from Newcastle to Leeds on a weekly basis for my lectures....and I'm worried that taking time off will affect me eventually getting my qualification?! I really just don't know what to do, I want to finish my course but I'm struggling to cope with feeling like this every single day! My bf is furious at me for even mentioning taking time off which is upsetting because it's not him having to deal with it! I really hope I don't feel like this for the whole 9 months! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Speak to your GP, they can probably give you some anti sickness tablets and see if that improves things? Don't worry about not eating enough, babys in the first trimester seem pretty tough, they deal with extreme sickness, weird cravings and people smoking/drinking excessively when they don't realise they're pregnant. Baby will take all it needs from you so try not to worry.
Tiredness is awful in the first trimester though, you have to be kind to yourself and accept that some days you just need to slow down. FWIW I felt much better after 13 weeks, more energy etc so hopefully you will too.
Tell your OH he has no idea how tough it is being pregnant and to support you, i think sometimes they don't realise because you're not carrying around a heavy bump yet. Hope you're feeling better soon, and congratulations!

Sickness in pregnancy can be severe and in your case it would not be unreasonable to have time off. How much are you managing to drink? Someone being as sick are you are is at risk of dehydration.

There is medication that is safe to take in pregnancy have a look at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist guidelines on nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.

Early pregnancy is tough. The tiredness alone can be awful but when coupled with severe sickness it can be almost unbearable.

Please please please go to the doctor. They can help you.

Your BF’s reaction is quite disturbing. Does he understand how bad it actually is?! You really need his support right now.

If you are on facebook join a group called Hyperemesis Gravidarum and Pregnancy Sickness. People there have bee through it all and will advise you on meds and where you stand with time off work. Very supportive group. I was signed off several times with both my pregnancies

Hi,

Am on my third pregnancy and have been signed off for a month with HG. It would be literally impossible for me to work I can't drive or do much at the moment due to sickness.

I'm on my 5th lot of anti emetics - the doctors were really understanding when I've been and offered me a sick note without me requesting this.

At the end of the day put yourself first, if your really struggling your not any good at work anyway.

Good luck, pregnancy sickness is the worst and people who haven't had HG don't understand how debilitating it is .
