podmog, i googled this:

Glucose Tolerance Test

How it is performed

After an overnight fast a sample of blood is taken. Then 75 g of glucose dissolved in 250 to 350 ml of water is drunk. Two hours later another blood sample is taken. The levels of glucose in the two samples are then carefully measured. Account is taken of the fact that the concentration of glucose measured in plasma is 10 per cent higher than in whole blood.

A diagnosis of diabetes is made if the level of glucose in the fasting blood sample is over 6.7 mmol/l or the level in plasma is over 7.8 mmol/l and/or the levels in the second sample are 10 mmol/l and 11.1 mmol/l. A mole is a basic unit of amount of substance. A millimole (mmol) is a thousandth of a mole. Glucose levels are measured in thousandths of a mole per litre (mmol/l).

In healthy people the glucose concentration rises to about twice the normal level within the first hour and returns to normal within two hours. In diabetes, the blood glucose rises to a much higher level than normal and the return to normal takes three hours or more. The urine test shows that a large amount of glucose is being excreted.

also - if hoxtonchick is around, she's a bit of an expert on this...

I'm not having the blood test - if there is a problem, will it be picked up in urine samples?

Podmog - was there only one blood test after the glucose? That is not the test I am familiar with. Bundle describes what I am more used too. Your test doesn't sound too bad to me but there is insufficient info.

Hello Podmog (thanks bundle!), sounds ok to me. Fasting of 5.1 & 2 hour post-glucose of 8.1 are definitely in the normal range, so don't worry (maybe tell your consultant to take a running jump....?). How many weeks pregnant are you? If you're at all concerned you could ask them to repeat the test but it's a bit of a pain for you (the one good thing about having diabetes pre-pregnancy was that I didn't have to have gestational diabetes test....). Have you looked at the Diabetes UK website here ? Though I've just had a quick read, & if you haven't got it I don't think it'll be very helpful.... Oh yes, & the other thing is to keep an eye on the wee dipsticks they should be doing at every antenatal visit - they're a good first warning. HTH. Ask away with any questions you've got.
