hi ladies,
2 weeeks ago i found out, through your advice, that my 'hard bump' feeling was actually braxton hicks.
im now 26 weeks and im getting them almost every day. is that normal, so often? now, today, im feeling my bump rigid for hours. because im at work, i cant lay down to relax and see if it goes away. do you think its just a long BH or is it something else? i think im slightly worried.
i do have a midwife appointment on wednesday and will let her know about these constancy but i would love to know now, if its possible... i hope there is someone online today that could help me. i hope lulumama is online too!

Odds are what you're feeling is normal, but tell your midwife anyway.

Wish I could be more help.

thats my husband's opinion too!

im at home now and after laying down for a bit my belly has finally relaxed and baby was kicking away. im still puzzled by it, will definitely ask midwife on wednesday.

thanx mkg!

yoo hoo !!

BH are normal, but they vary so much from woman to woman, some never feel them, some have them a lot !

i had this a lot, to the point i was admitted for monitoring at 28 weeks after 12 hours of a totally rigid belly and many, many BH..of course, all was well, i would always say that if you are concerned or don;t feel 'right; to call the MW

also, not drinking enough can lead to more BH, for some reason ,so make sure your fluid levels are up and call the midwife if you are needing reassurance x

ah thanx! so im not imagining things when i feel my belly rigid for hours...

now because its relaxed again im calm about it. but i will mention to midfwife on wednesday regardless.

i drink loads of water!

do you know if women with lots of BH have a tendency of pre-term labour?

from my own personal experience, no! but i had good strong labour contractions

the practice contractions you feel are not dilating the cervix, and not actually doing anything at the moment, just getting your uterus 'toned up' , as it were

it should not mean prem labour

any contractions , BH or not, accompanied by blood or fluid loss must be checked out immediately

definitely mention to the MW, and if you are worried again in the meantime x

I had loads of BHs with DD, most of which were pretty painful and would really make me catch my breath and stop what I was doing but didn't go into labour until 39+5.
Am now pregnant again (35 weeks) and have have BHs since 16 weeks - I couldn't even say how many a day I seem to get so many!

I wouldn't worry about pre-term labour - an association with BHs isn's something I've ever heard of.

Did hear though that each BH slightly tones the muscles making actual labour contractions more efficient and labour less painful and shorter!

I whizzed through my first lablour so there may be some truth in it!

I should add that my ob/gyn told me that the baby's movements can trigger contractions so if your lo is bouncing around in there the contractions may be related to that too. Kinda like a pinball machine.

Twinmummyx2 · 29/04/2007 08:04

I think that is normal.....i had then with my 4 singletons...but none at all with my 2 twin pregnancies....i think its a case of everyone and every pregnancy is different (even with the same mum!)...but mention it to your midwife too...just to make doubely sure.xx

jabuti · 29/04/2007 08:35

wow! twins twice? thats amazing!

very interesting that the baby can trigger the contractions, i think it must be the case for me because she has been very active lately.

and if BH help labour to be shorter and lesss painful, bring it on
