Baby's movements

I'm 31+4 at the moment with my first baby!

Just a quick question about movements generally...you hear a lot about the movements being a big thing to watch for/monitor which is a great thing but my question is this...what do you do if your baby still has no 'pattern' so to speak.

I suffer with polyhydramnios so can't feel the baby's movements as much as I'd like anyway, but I honestly can't tell a pattern from one day to the next. It's just random. Makes it harder when MW & Drs say 'only you know your baby's pattern' but I honestly don't!

That's not to say I don't feel any movement, I do of course, but wonder if or how I'd know if it had changed.

Hope this makes sense!!

Starla xx

Sort of in the same boat 28+2 with an anterior placenta. My little man doesn't really have a pattern either but the best of advice was a consultant who said if you think you haven't felt him take 20 minutes to sit quietly or lie down and drink something cold. If I do that it usually makes him move or I am more concentrated on the movements. There have been several trips to day assessment when I've thought I haven't felt him and they say if you're not happy to call/go in. Good luck xx

34 weeks with my second here. Yes so by 'pattern' they really mean general pattern of movements e.g. Does baby move more at night / is he kicking a lot? As if that stops suddenly you should let someone know. I truly don't think babies in utero have a steady pattern tho. I'm quite interested as to whether the level of movement equates to their general wriggliness in life. My first was kicky and hiccupy and she is a lively little lady. This one is slower in the womb. Anyway, I digress...

No pattern here, I just make sure she’s had a good wriggle every day. If she doesn’t I try cold, hot and / or sweet food / drink and lie on my side. If that doesn’t work I go in for monitoring.

I downloaded that app Count the kicks. My little man had no routine and sometimes decided to go quiet. Always ended up going to get checked and he booted the hand off the midwives putting on the monitoring equipment. Grin

Ah ok well the baby moves more at night than in the day, that's about the only recognisable pattern. Suppose I'm just getting myself worried that I might be missing if they slow down if they weren't terribly regular in the first place.

I've got one of the kick counting apps, like 10 kicks in 2 hours (normally takes less) and I found that quite reassuring but when I mentioned it to MW she said that was outdated and they don't encourage that anymore, just to go by what is normal for your own baby.

When I said it either didn't have a routine or if it did then I was having trouble recognising it, she just said again don't rely on kick counts and go by what is normal for you!!!!

I know it's what they are told to say but it's a bit maddening!!

Op I think the best app is the official count the kicks one where it's not counting to 10 but tapping the screen every time your baby has a session of movement. I'm 27+5 with anterior placenta and finding it hard to judge if there's a pattern or not, but seem to have established that while the baby may move during the day, he will definitely be active 8pm-12am so that's when I'd be concerned not to feel him, if that makes sense?

The app also gives you nice graphs and average daily number of movements etc so helps me feel a bit more in control. Feels like a minefield though!

@Papillion86 I can go for much longer than 20 mins without movement 🙁 but it's usually when I'm at work, I find it much harder when I'm at work or when I'm out, if I'm at home or lying down I find it much easier. Still, can't really just lie down at work to see if I feel anything. Maybe once I start maternity leave it will be easier? Or maybe I'll end up obsessing over it...I'm prone to pregnancy paranoia!!
