Something that has come into dp and I's conversations.

What do you think - good idea or bad idea?

Have any of you mnetters done it before?

Very good idea. My ex SIL did it, but it costs quite a lot.And hopefully you'll never need it, but if you did, you'd be mighty glad you had it
If you can afford it do it.

Dp is very into his science and thinks it's a good idea. I worry that the money could be better used at the minute but I suppose you can't put a price on health.

You'll be annoyed at spending the money if it never gets used, but you'll never ever want to have to use it.
It's a tricky decision. The money can always be better used, but wont you be glad to have it if the need arose. It will be the best spent money you have ever spent. Hmm, could've worded that better, but can't be arsed to change it

Thanks bandofmothers. One of those catch 22 situations. Will maybe give microbiologist friend a ring and see what she says.

good idea, look into prices too and see what you think.

I'm glad you've started this thread BeachBunni!! I've been thinking about this for some time now. I think it's brilliant all the stem cell research that is going on. I will definitely either donate to research or have frozen for LO's use in the future if he/she should need it.

Definitely should be put to some use, whether donated or kept. Ultimately in the future this research could cure so many life threatening/changing conditions/injuries.

Be interesting to see what prices people find to have cells frozen. There seems to be lots of adverts in the back of magazines offering this service. I've also got a letter with my maternity notes asking if I wish to donate the cells to research. Does anyone else have similar?

I started this thread recently to make sure that anyone deciding to do this checks out in advance whether the hospital staff will do it for them

We have a directive at our hospital (as do amny), not to do it. The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) does not support it because it really is seen to be exploitation of families.

The companies that provide this 'service' should employ people to obtain the cells and not rely on midwives.

At the end of the day they are making vast quantities of money out of parents.

Cells for research or for known familky problems are different than commercial company storage BTW. Midwives would do that.
