Hi everyone,

Due to be sectioned on Friday at exactly 38 weeks. Anybody out there that has had there babies at 38 weeks? Has everything been okay? Has there needed to be a longer stay in hospital?

Was given steroids at 25 weeks to develop her lungs quicker because they thought she was gonna make an early appearance. She is measuring higher on the growth chart too.

Thank you

DD2 was born at 33 weeks. 4lb 8oz at birth. She only had to spend 10 days in SCBU.

DameDaffodil · 24/01/2018 21:35

Both of mine were planned sections, DS at 38 weeks and DD at 37. Everything was absolutely fine.

Mrstumbletap · 24/01/2018 21:36

I had a section at 40 weeks and he was a huge 10lbs. I wish I had the section at 38 weeks. Hindsight is a great thing.

My gorgeous currently snoozing 6 month old was born dead on 38 weeks....all healthy. No issues. Alert, latched immediately and a decent weight. Awwww congrats. Enjoy your new baby......they smell amazing!!

SuperBeagle · 24/01/2018 21:40

38 week is considered full term (38-42 weeks), so the overwhelming majority of babies born at 38 weeks will be as healthy as they would be if they were born on their due date.

Redisthemagicolour · 24/01/2018 21:43

I had one before 38 weeks and one just after. (And one at 39 weeks). All considered full term. All natural labours. All healthy and good weights (6lb 3 a little small for one but I had been suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning!! - the others 8lb and 7lb 13).

Katescurios · 24/01/2018 21:45

Induced at 37.5, perfectly healthy Dd born weighing 8lb11, had her late evening and as home by 9am the next morning.

littlemissalwaystired · 24/01/2018 21:46

Unless there are any underlying problems then 38 weeks should be fine and dandySmile if all goes well then no need for any extra time in hospital. Good luck.

LuchiMangsho · 24/01/2018 21:46

38+2. Went home after 2 days for a C section.
Second baby born at 26 weeks. In my two month neonatal stint the ONLY 38 weekers I saw were very poorly at birth. It is not routine for 38 weekers to need extra time in hospital as they are well past full term.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 24/01/2018 21:47

Went into labour totally naturally at 38+4. Hard Labour was 5 hours, born in the pool, home again before the day was over. She was 7lb 13 - I think she was just ready early! Good luck!

Ifyouthinkiwillsleepyoudream · 24/01/2018 21:50

DS was born at 38+3 naturally and all was fine, he is a healthy, strong boy!

BewareOfDragons · 24/01/2018 21:51

My last one was induced at exactly 38 weeks. Planned, due to hemmoraghing with the first 2 at 39 weeks, so didn't want to go that long again.

Went beautifully. Best birth of the 3. Perfectly healthy baby.

We took her home within hours as the maternity ward was slammed. No worries. x

Good luck, OP> xx

reallyanotherone · 24/01/2018 21:53

Red really? And was your baby ok? Usually babies have much higher co levels than mum- if mum’s co levels require treatment, the baby will be very poorly.

What was your co level, out of interest?

Induced at 38 weeks with a 9lb baby. All fine.

DuruttiColumnist · 24/01/2018 22:10

DS1 was born at 38 weeks and had to go under the lights for jaundice. Other than that he was fine!

blinkineckmum · 24/01/2018 22:22

38 weeks is full term.
Mine were born naturally at 38 and 37 weeks. No problems. Home the next day.

Chipsahoy · 25/01/2018 09:37

That's a normal time to have a baby. I had my first naturally at 38weeks and we were home in 4hrs.

trevthecat · 25/01/2018 09:38

My 4m old was born at 38 weeks. It's classed as full term. Had him at 8:30am weighing 6lb 12oz was home in time for tea! Everything will be fine. Good luck

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 25/01/2018 09:38

Ds born at 37 weeks at 6lb 14. Stayed 2 nights (gave birth 11pm on night 1) due to him being a bit sleepy and not wanting to latch. All fine though.

Kitcat159 · 25/01/2018 11:33

I was born at 32 weeks and I'm fine :)
Was 2lb and tiny but fine health wise.

JJPP123 · 25/01/2018 11:35

My twins came at 36 weeks. Both under 5lbs, both stayed with me immediately. Home after 3 days.

Shutupanddance1 · 25/01/2018 14:06

Had DD at 38 weeks by c section, she was 7lbs 13 ozs. Thank goodness

Afreshcuppateaplease · 25/01/2018 14:08

Dc2 was born at 38+2 weighing 8lb1oz and home within 6 or so hours

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/01/2018 15:42

Ds2 was born two full weeks early, and ds1 and ds3 were each 10 days early - ds1 did end up in hospital longer, but that was because he developed neonatal jaundice - which was nothing to do with his gestational age, as far as I am aware.

Ds2 and ds3 were born at home, and were both fighting fit.

They are now 20, 22 and 24, all taller than me, all fit and healthy and bright - none of them had any negative effects from being born early.

I am sure your lovely baby will be just fine, @sunshineonmyshoulder - please don’t worry - I know this is a bit of a daft thing to say - parenthood is about worrying, and there is always something new to worry about (feeding, weaning, school, boyfriends/girlfriends, driving tests, university, jobs) - but it is ALSO about learning to manage the worries, and keep them in proportion so you can enjoy all the phases of your baby’s life, from tiny, squidgy newborn, all the way to strapping 6- foot man, who can reach things off high shelves for you - and pats you kindly on the head when you ask - but is still your lad who needs a cuddle from his mum.
