Time off work for private scan

Does anyone know what the rules are on this? Obviously any antenatal appointments have to be paid, but I'm just wondering if the same goes for if it's private?

I'm having to pay for a private reassurance scan as our epu only offers the one scan, and I had that at 6+5. Due to history of recurrent miscarriage, the wait till the 12 week is going to play havoc with my anxiety so I've booked in for a private scan at 9 weeks to bridge the gap. However I've had no choice to but book it during work hours as was the only appointment they had left! So will the same rule apply to allowing time off for this as it's not nhs? I already had to argue my case over nhs ones being paid when I first told my manager believe it or not, so feel like I need to be prepared incase she's funny again!

I think you’re probably pushing your luck with a non-routine scan I’m afraid.

PotteringAlong · 24/01/2018 18:54

I wouldn’t imagine so as it’s a choice, not a scheduled medical test.

MagicFajita · 24/01/2018 18:56

You probably won't get paid time off for this.

Do you have a myultrababy nearby? They offer late appointments that may be easier for you to attend.

A nice, compassionate employer would let you, but if your boss is a stickler, I think you’ll struggle.
Can’t you take a few hours annual leave?

Fia256 · 24/01/2018 18:58

Thanks, as I thought. It's not a problem if it is, I just wanted to know whether I'd need to ask for annual leave or not as unfortunately, I don't have a very honest manager as I've already learnt so far!

Do you need to tell them it's a private scan? I would just say I have a scan and see what they say.

LalalalalaLand · 24/01/2018 19:54

I would just say it's a dating scan as they are unsure when you conceived.
Otherwise lots of private scanning places have evening and weekend appointments so have a look at a few others. We had ours at Window to the Womb.

LalalalalaLand · 24/01/2018 19:55

Oh sorry misread. I thought you were having it at 6+5 which is quite a common time for a dating scan.

Desmondo2016 · 24/01/2018 20:00

At 6.5 weeks I wouldn't have told anyone at work so i would have just booked leave.

Twitchett22 · 24/01/2018 20:11

I'd just tell them you've got to have a scan as recommended by your doctor, you shouldn't have to go into anymore detail and as its so early say youd appreciate their discretion. If they start being arsey pull a sicky for the day, employers expect women to need time off for different appointments, it shouldn't be their business what the appointment is for

Fia256 · 24/01/2018 20:14

I've had my one at 6+5 already. I know a lot of people don't choose to tell work so early, however I had a mmc at 20 weeks in June, and suffered with ptsd since which has required a lot of support from work (my manager in that case, has actually been a great support). So with that on top of recurrent early miscarriage, it was easier for me to just be honest from the start with scans and the fact I'm pregnant again.

There's a couple of other places in my area, but they are all twice the price. I will ask for it as annual leave, and if that fails will just have to move to a week or so later. Sorry I just re read my first post and probably came across that I'm trying to push my luck and get it off work. I just wasn't sure what the rules are with it and thought I'd better find out before mentioning it to my manager. Thanks all Smile
