Drank slimey bottled water...

Here I go again...

I wasn’t enjoying the taste of my tap water so had a look on the water supplier’s website and it said the water in my area contained coliform bacteria! I’ve emailed in for more information but bought bottled in the meantime.

I bought own brand 2L bottles, poured a big glass and drank most of it, to then have a slimey film in my mouth. My partner tried it and agreed it did not taste right.

Again I have emailed in (people must think I’m a nightmare) to the supermarket, but would you be concerned that this could harm the baby? I’m thinking all sorts like contamination etc... I can’t see any recalls for it online so I’m really hoping it’s just the taste!

Your body is, on the whole, an incredible filter.

Women have healthy babies in war zones, prisons, refugee camps.

If it hasn't made you ill yet (and surely it would by now, if it was going to) I wouldn't give it another moment's thought.

Bedsox · 23/01/2018 15:15

I think it would be fine why bot buy a water filter? I think all water is contaminated to a degree though.

Have you spoken to your mw or gp about the anxiety you seem to be experiencing? Unless you have had a specific letter about a specific problem on your street, then tap water is safe to drink (I'm assuming you're in the uk??).

If your tap water was contaminated to the point of being dangerous for pregnant women then I'd expect your water company to be more proactive than a message on their website.

As for the bottled water, I wonder if being pregnant had altered your perception of taste. Certainly in the first trimester of both my pregnancies there were some things that I suddenly couldn't stand the taste of.

Thanks all, I am becoming very OCD and have an appointment to talk about it this week. I’ve tried mentioning it at my other appointments but I’ve just been told it’s normal to worry I don’t think I’ve made clear how it’s affecting things.

That’s a good point a small amount of anything that wasn’t right won’t harm the baby I’m sure, and when you think about tap water abroad etc I’m sure it will be fine. Just seen to be coming across stuff like this now I’m pregnant, I’d never had bad bottled water before I was pregnant!

It's probably more that your sense of smell and taste is heightened, meaning that bottled water which you would previously have drunk without problems now tastes / feels odd, perhaps due to (safe) levels of certain minerals.

GuntyMcGee · 23/01/2018 16:41

Even if the water was dodgy and you became ill from it, you'd have a runny tummy for a while, you'd be a bit dehydrated and feel rough and that'd be it. You won't contaminate a baby from drinking contaminated water.

I'm sure the majority of the water we drink, tap or bottled, contains all manner of types of bacteria, which our stomach acid deals with quite efficiently in most cases.

You do need to seek help for this obsessive worrying. If you haven't already, go to your midwife or GP and explain to them that this goes beyond normal, rational concern and that you'd like a perinatal mental health referral if they have a pmh team in your area. If they don't, request an urgent referral to the trusts mental health team (usually a psychiatrist and community psychiatric nurse) who can support you properly.

Bux that is a really good point I thought that too as even ready salted crisps smell strong to me now haha!

Gunty you are right even food poising is unlikely to harm an unborn baby. I agree totally that’s why as I have made an appointment. I think I just passed it off for a while because other posts made me feel relatively normal but I do understand what you are saying.

To be fair though I think I would have probably posted about this slimey water anyway lol

If it had verified coliforms in it, you'd be on a boil order

JustOverthinking · 23/01/2018 20:53

The tap water I’m not really bothered about, it does state on the website there is this in the water but we’ve not had a warning and I’ve not been ill from it so I’m not too concerned. It’s just the slimey filmy bottled water lol

I think bottled water is less heavily regulated- yuck!

JustOverthinking · 23/01/2018 21:09

Blergh, I will be avoiding! Funnily enough a lot of people have put bad reviews for this on the website anyway dating a while back
