Any chance of an early scan?

I have an initial appointment booked with my GP tomorrow as have just found out I'm pregnant!

However I am a little bit worried as I have no idea how far gone I am (I don't have periods, I was on the pill so this was a happy surprise!) and have been very very very stressed recently due to family/relationship conflict so am really worried about miscarriage.

I'm basically crapping myself and was wondering whether they'd be able to give me an early scan, or whether I need to wait. This is my first so I'm just stressing and not really sure what I'm meant to be doing!

Thanks xx

You’ll need to wait unless you pay privately. Sadly the nhs doesn’t have the resources or slots to do reassurance scans. Even women with bleeding often have to wait a few days for a scan as it’s such a struggle to fit everyone in.

You can pay for an early reassurance scan but the NHS are unlikely to do one if everything seems to be ok x

ChilliCheeseMama · 21/01/2018 21:26

Ah thank you, I guess I'll just have to wait and see :(!! Xx

I would have thought they would send you for a dating scan if you have absolutely no idea how far along you may be

Mrstobe90 · 21/01/2018 21:34

Unless you have pain and bleeding, they won’t usually give you a scan. until about 6/7 weeks, you can’t really see much so I think they avoid early scanning to prevent worry xx

Have you checked you definitely need a GP appointment? Many areas are now a straight self referral to the midwives for a booking appointment, no need to see a GP.

The midwives will be able to feel your abdomen at your booking appointment and give you a rough guess of how far alone no you are. Pre 12 weeks there isn't much to feel, after 12 weeks they can feel the uterus rising out of the pelvis.

Ann9456 · 21/01/2018 21:45

I was in the same position as you and got sent to the hospital for a blood test to determine how far gone I was. X

Nikki2ol6 · 22/01/2018 09:04

Not really... they would attempt to guess then scan you at around 12 weeks. However you can go for a private scan Iv had quite a few for reassurance, they give you a lot of pics

Hmm ok, would it make any difference that there is a potential for twins? paternal grandfather is a twin, and it has skipped a generation throughout his family, so we would be next to have twins if it carried on 😳

Twins are usually passed down by the maternal side as it's thought that the gene for releasing more than one egg during ovulation is inherited. Even if you were likely to have twins based on family history, it's unlikely you'd be able to get a scan on the NHS based on this alone.
If you speak to your GP about your concerns about dates, they may scan you at your local EPU as they'd want to be sure they can do your 12 week scan in good time.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 22/01/2018 09:45

You’ll likely get a dating scan if you have no idea how far along you are so I would expect that you’ll get a scan in the next week or two anyway. Otherwise what are they going to base your 12 week scan on?!

pastabest · 22/01/2018 09:45

Nope wouldn't make any difference to the NHS

If you want an early scan there are loads of places you an pat to have one.

It's not unusual to feel like this and it's a long time yo wait when you are anxious but the NHS only does the necessary medical scans, and occasionally early reassurance scans for people who have had previous losses.

I've had 3 pregnancies

1st one I paid for an early scan at 9 weeks as I needed to know if the pregnancy was viable before 12 weeks (job related) I found out at the private scan that I had a missed miscarriage at 6 weeks.

2nd pregnancy I wasn't sure of my dates due to the previous miscarriage and the midwife at my booking appointment felt my abdomen and felt I was possibly further along and sent me for a dating scan. I had it and I was indeed 11 weeks rather than 8.

Third pregnancy despite the previous miscarriage and despite the dating issue in my 2nd pregnancy I was just offered the routine scan at 12 weeks.

womaninatightspot · 22/01/2018 09:59

I was sent for an early scan as I didn't have any clue as to how far along I was. BF so no periods. GP referred me at initial appointment for next available slot I think it was a week later as it's better to have dates than miss out on tests available at 12 week scan. It was twins (though I had no idea and am sure that wouldn't have made of a difference!) and I was 9w +3 went back at 12 weeks for scan to have nuchal testing etc.

DH mother was an identical twin, his sister also had identical twins as did we (all girls). A lot of spontaneity in this family!

womaninatightspot · 22/01/2018 10:03

Also in our area you def. need gp appointment. It's odd that there is such regional differences in this.

ChilliCheeseMama · 22/01/2018 10:26

Just been in and didn't get offered a scan, literally just squished my stomach around and told me they couldn't feel anything yet (which is standard for anything pre-13 weeks) and been sent away told to wait for a letter from the midwife.

Feel really underwhelmed and physically sick! I guess I'll have to keep my fingers and toes crossed and wait it out. Hopefully because we have no idea how far gone i am they get in touch a little sooner 🙃 thanks anyway xx

Have you tried a clear blue digital with weeks indicator? You might get a better idea?

ChilliCheeseMama · 22/01/2018 11:02

Literally just got one from boots on the way back home! 😂

Test says I'm 3+ weeks so I'm at least 5 weeks gone 🙃 hopefully close to 12 weeks, hate being in this 'danger' zone :(!
