So I'm 9 weeks pregnant and haven't went for a number 2 in 7 days. I went with my mum to a chemist but they wouldn't give me suppositories without a doctor say so. So I phoned NHS 24 and they said I've to go to a and e where a doctor wants to check on baby and sort out my erm problem. Lol sorry for tmi was just wondering if anyone has been through this and what to expect?

I feel your pain. It's hideous I'm at 10 weeks. My midwife said we could have movicol or lactulose. Husband went and bought movicol over the counter and said it was for him.

Works like a charm, sachets and no crazy running to the loo, just a nice softener! Grim. Sorry!

TTCI · 20/01/2018 17:32

@Noloudnoises I think I'm past that because it's already there but it just won't come out :(
My backside area is too painful. It's so embarrassing and I don't know what they mean by "check on baby" x

You can buy suppositories without needing to explain can't you? They're in the normal boots aisle? If not, then get your mum to go in on her own? i used suppositories last time and this time. Just to get things going!

endofthelinefinally · 20/01/2018 18:08

Send your mum to buy glycerine suppositories.
Sending you to A&E is ridiculous.
Once you have cleared the blockage stay on the movicol and eat plenty of fruit and veg.

Noloudnoises · 20/01/2018 18:08

And yes, I would go to an a&e (possibly in morning now?) as they'll just want to check all ok. I'm pretty sure it will be, you've just hit a brick wall, so to speak! They'll sort you out. Do not worry.

thewanderer03 · 20/01/2018 18:10

I had the same problem and a softener did work, even thought it was already there! I literally felt blocked but it helped it move through and didn't make it go the other way. Hope it shits soon though, it was awful! X

thewanderer03 · 20/01/2018 18:11

Bloody autocorrect! I mean shifts soon, although appropriate 😂😂

LostMyBaubles · 20/01/2018 18:13

A bit of Vaseline to the exit will help it slip out.
Lots of water to soften the stool
And lactulose is what I take

Ps my eldest son(in fact all 3) suffer with severe constipation and the eldest went around 10 weeks with out passing the hard stool! Yes he was in and out of hosp etc but didmt clear up until he had some liquid paraffin which is not recommended for pregnant women

Oooocrikeyitscold · 20/01/2018 18:13

Lactulose!! I took it through pregnancy and also post giving birth.

MrsMcW · 20/01/2018 18:18

Another vote for lactulose. Also drink masses of water and eat dates and kiwi fruit!

Thesunrising · 20/01/2018 18:21

Agree with previous posters - get on a macrogol stool softener. Laxido and Cosmocol are nearly half the price of Movicol and are exactly the same product. A few sachets over 24/48 hours should start to break up the blockage at the back end, so to speak, then drop down to a low maintenance dose to stop it happening again. Constipation during pregnancy is an awful blight and does nothing to protect your pelvic floor, which needs as much care as possible with all the extra weight of a baby bearing down. Also try to find the food that works for you to keep things whooshing through nicely. For me that was apples, but most fruit or veg with a high water content will help! Good luck!

Thesunrising · 20/01/2018 18:23

Also, google squatty potty to watch useful unicorn video about benefit of sitting in the right position to aid pooing. Then find a footstool or upturn a bin/box to achieve the same effect.

TTCI · 20/01/2018 18:29

It's absolutely horrendous I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. I don't know why I have to go to A and E feel a bit silly. Can't send my mum in now because it's too late and she wouldn't anyway because this is my first baby and she's a nervous gran to be lol. I don't have cramps or anything just poo can't come out because my body won't let it because it's too painful. I suspect I also have piles. What will they do to check on baby? X thank you for all your kind replies x

Yes, have had a think. No need for a&he that's them covering their backs as anything 'unusual' and pregnancy will automatically tell them to say that. You do indeed need glycerin suppositories. Will grease the alley as my darling disgusting husband says! Bleurgh!

PerfectlyDone · 20/01/2018 18:32

Glycerin suppositories
Glycerin suppositories
Glycerin suppositories
Glycerin suppositories
Glycerin suppositories
Glycerin suppositories
Glycerin suppositories!!

Yes, I did mean to post that several times.

Lactulose is also safe in pregnancy but more likely to give your cramps and wind, it can also take a couple of days before it reaches from your mouth to your tail end IYSWIM.
Glycerin sups - safe, easy, work, can be repeated if necessary.

PerfectlyDone · 20/01/2018 18:35

Other suggestions:

  • put some Vaseline or similar around your anus before you try to go
  • poo in a warm bath for that first painful 'cork' Grin
  • sit on the toilet with your feet well supported and your knees higher than your hips, leaning back: this tilts your tail bone slightly so a poo can slip out more easily
  • drink loads and loads of water
  • eat oranges WITH pith or fresh orange juice with bits
  • ditto prune juice
  • AllBran is unbeaten wrt fibre content compared to all other cereals. Put a spoonful in yoghurt, sprinkle it over whatever other cereal you like, put in soup, use it in baking, great in porridge.... you get the idea.

Have I mentioned GLYCERIN SUPPOSITORIES??!

TTCI · 20/01/2018 18:35

@PerfectlyDone is that what they'll give me? I can't go to a chemist now because there'll all closed x

OP posts:
TTCI · 20/01/2018 18:36

@PerfectlyDone I don't think so what are they again?! X

OP posts:
PerfectlyDone · 20/01/2018 18:37

Any supermarket has glycerin sups, I think.
If not it can wait til the morning.
You'll wait for hours and hours in A+E - this time of year is worse than other times, and this year is worse (again! Hmm) than previous years.

I despair when the (not medically trained) call handlers algorithms dictate 'A+E' without any kind of leeway for common sense.

PerfectlyDone · 20/01/2018 18:37
Grin
TurquoiseDress · 20/01/2018 18:45

Yes get your hands on some glycerin suppositories and/or lactulose to try and get things moving though will take longer.

I would be very reluctant to go to A&E- I think the helplines like NHS direct/111 just work off algorithms, probably the fact you are pregnant has rung alarm bells!

But obviously, your situation is neither an accident or an emergency...I totally sympathise with pregnancy constipation!

Rudgie47 · 20/01/2018 18:46

Go to Sainburys now and buy some tinned prunes, not the juice.Eat them, the whole tin. By the morning if you dont have a poo I'll be shocked. prunes are even better than a lot of precribed medication.
I once made some plum flapjacks and ate 3 and they had a thick layer of plums in them. I had to run to work and didnt think I'd make it to the loo. Very potent the plum family.

Noloudnoises · 20/01/2018 19:00

Oh yes, pooing in the bath is a good one for the first go. You could try a bit of a poke in there too safe in the knowledge soap is nearby. My god this is a hideous subject but needs must!

Wishing the poo fairy visits soon!

OutComeTheWolves · 20/01/2018 19:29

I don't have any advice other than to echo what's already been said, but I just wanted to say I've been there too and it's bloody awful. You have my sympathy.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/01/2018 19:32

Seeing as no one has mentioned suppositories, I might as well.

And prune juice.
