Yest I started amoxicillin for actute sinusitis. I'm 30 weeks pregnant. However today I've got the diahorrea and my stomach actually aches/burns like I'm going to be sick. Is this normal?? I'm so uncomfortable at the min. I've taken a probiotic but things seem to have got worse after taking it. Any advice on what I can take or should I stop taking antibiotic

Amoxicillin are perfectly safe during pregnancy, especially after 12 weeks so please don't worry, I've been on so many antibiotics during this pregnancy you wouldn't believe it but they really are fine. The ones you need to look out for are the ones that treat acne. They are the ones that can be dangerous as certain gestation xx

I'd speak to midwife as it could be anything and it will clear your mind x

BigBaboonBum · 20/01/2018 11:25

These were one of the things I had to take when I was hospitalised due to flu when pregnant, when I went home they gave me these. He’s currently 7 and perfectly fine!

Afterconkerseason · 20/01/2018 12:04

I had to have antibiotics in this pregnancy and all is fine so far so don’t worry about their use generally!
Have you taken Amoxicillin before? Perhaps it doesn’t agree with you or could be a bug separate to the antibiotics. If you’re not feeling well and are worried perhaps best to go back to the GP.
Antibiotics do tend to give me a sensitive stomach (and thrush!!) but I’ve personally never had stomach ache or burning sensation with them.

Sounds like you could either have a wee sensitivity to amox or just needing to take them with food (liquid doesn't count, take food with it)

Ask a midwife or doctor though as we aren't professionals and only have our own experiences

Mugglenet · 20/01/2018 15:17

I think it is a sensitivity. It's never happened before when I've taken it not pregnant. First baby and I stress when something "isn't right" thanks for all advice. It's reassuring to know it's perfectly ok to take. Thank you all

Hi Hun had exactly the same! On antibiotics for tonsillitis. I had the worst belly ever and was on the toilet all the time! I went to the doctors they advised to try some natural yogurt with live bacteria, because the antibiotics take the goodness out of your gut. They did say though after trying that if it didn't help they would be limited to what they could give me. I got the little actimels to have on a morning and no joke it's actually helped!!! Good luck xxxxx

juneisthemonth · 20/01/2018 15:56

But I'm also the same I have never suffered with it before... bloody pregnancy! Lol

juneisthemonth · 20/01/2018 15:56

Sorry and I took the actimel for about 4 days before it made any difference xxxxx

I was prescribed strong doses of amoxicillin and painkillers due to a lung infection when 30 weeks pregnant with my DD2, who is now 19.

My GP at the time said that it was just about the widest tolerated antibiotic in pregnancy, and I can say that DD2 was born totally fine and unaffected.

Perhaps you are just more susceptible to the side-effects because of your pregnancy? Visit the GP again on Monday if you are still having problems and are concerned. I think other antibiotics can also be used and tried if this one is not suiting you. Some, such as erythromycin were given to me in hospital when expecting DD3 (now 15) to guard against infection as much as possible after my waters had gone early (just before 35 weeks). So worth asking if you aren't happy.

Anyway, hope you are better soon.

I went and bought actimel today. Anything to put good bacteria back into my stomach. I need the antibiotic to fight of this sinus infection. I've suffered my whole life with them and I've got through the whole pregnancy without having one but I know the signs and when I need help to fight it. Just never reacted to the antibiotic before so I def think it's due to being more supseptial when pregnant.

I would make sure you are taking a quality probiotic. Actimel doesn't really count. It's mostly just sugar. Go get one from Holland and Barrett or another shop. You'll likely pay a bit for it. And take it for a good month or so.

It's possible to have a funny tummy on antibiotics, but if your doctor prescribed it to you, it's safe. I've been on two courses of topical antibiotics and one 10 day course of oral antibiotics this pregnancy (for a skin infection that wouldn't go away and was worried it might infect baby as it's on my breast). The doctor was careful to make sure what they gave me was safe. But you do what to get your natural digestive flora back on track. I took about 6 weeks of Solgar probiotics after though and I haven't had any other side effects from them.

Mugglenet · 20/01/2018 17:58

I normally take biocult probiotics fro. Health shop. I can't live without them however I this antibiotic has played havoc with my stomach.
