Nosebleeds in pregnancy - why?

popsycal · 27/07/2004 21:00

Is there a medical reason why this happens? I used to have them as a child then they stopped in my teens. Now i get noesbleeds only when pregnant....

Anyone know the reason why?

No idea, but it happened to me too! Also had them as a child.

Bellie · 27/07/2004 21:02

Hi popsycal,

No real idea why but I have also been getting them. Mentioned it to my midwife and he (yes he!) said that you produce more blood when pregnant and sometimes you will get them...

popsycal · 27/07/2004 21:03

you want to telll that to my veins then....
Even at full term, i was the proverbial stone!

Obviously we don't need the blood in our veins - just our noses!

I'm the same.

Also seem to have developed hay fever so tissues boxes in all rooms now. Lovely.

Guess just another one of those blooming things we have to go through.

Being pg is so glamorous

Bellie · 27/07/2004 21:40

Yes as well as the hayfever the eczema that I have not suffered with since childhood has returned with a vengence - as you say the glamourous side of pregnancy!!

zebra · 27/07/2004 21:42

An explanation . That says it's due to increased blood flow, but I thought it was more hormonal. I had to have a good blow almost every morning of last pregnancy.

I've had nosebleeds too. Checked my blood pressure just in case but it was actually very low. I remember reading something about the increased blood flow somewhere, also I think because you tend to get a stuffy nose you blow a lot which can burst the delicate blood vessels in the nose.

Hayfever here too. I'm just looking forward to this all being over!

Yorkie girl thats what someone I work with told me. I suffered quite a few nosebleeds while pregnant the second time, didn't have any the first time. They weren't anything major but did involve hiding from the public while at work if one occured. In fact usually only happened at work and usually just after I'd arrived probably to do with the fact that I'd hurried to work, I'm always late, and I walk there and back so maybe my blood pressure was up a little bit more than usual. and now that I think about it once I stopped work for my maternity leave I didn't get any more, interesting.

johno · 27/07/2004 22:35

i had them throughout my pregnacy and my mw told me it was ok as your nose is your safety valve for your blood pressure, i was really worried at the time, but when i stopped work they stopped to

smileawhile · 01/09/2004 22:39

I was informed, after a massive epistaxis (nosebleed) which led to me being hospitalised for 10 days with both nostrils packed at 28 weeks, that it is simply due to hormonal changes in your body and increased blood flow. They appear to be very common but the severity does seem to vary from woman to woman.

MummyToSteven · 01/09/2004 22:42

agree that it is due to hormonal changes. Like Gingernut I had nose bleeds and low bp during pg. Also was very snuffly from mid pg to a few months after birth which I guess is also the delightful hormonal changes - but there are certain advantages to having an impaired sense of smell when nappy changing"

libb · 01/09/2004 22:43

I got them as a teenager, when stressed and then again when pregnant - haven't had one since DS was born 16 weeks ago, I find it interesting as Dad gets them the same way I do!

(he just looks pregnant)

KateandtheGirls · 01/09/2004 23:23

I didn't get them any more than usual when I was pregnant, but I do tend to get them around the time of my period. (Obviously my body doesn't think I'm losing enough blood!) So I think it must be hormone-related. I have very low blood pressure, by the way.

hana · 02/09/2004 10:41

I get nosebleeds frequently with this pregnancy, usually late at night or first thing in the morning. Never get them when I'm not pregnant

Sari · 02/09/2004 11:10

I had zillions of nosebloods with both pregnancies and they used to drive me mad. Having a shower was a guaranteed way of setting one off, at times even touching my nose was enough. Never had problems with blood pressure so maybe they were serving a purpose.

popsycal · 02/09/2004 18:01

i get this too
