Scared to go out incase waters break

Title says it all really. I'm 9 days overdue atm and going mad just sat at home all day! But I'm really worried that if I go out my waters will break and I'll go into labour. For some reason it makes me feel really anxious, even about just going up to the shop. I was thinking I may go for a drive in a bit and grab a bit of shopping when I'm out but am finding it hard to make myself go. Don't know what I'm asking really, I guess I'm just looking for a bit of reassurance that it woildn't be so bad!

Also: should I take my hospital notes with me even if I just pop out for an hour?

mine happened on the hospital bed, nothing dramatic, thought I had wet myself, when the MW said it was the membranes going I cried and said I wasn't ready...bit late by then though!

Thishatisnotmine · 17/01/2018 14:34

I dropped my dd at nusery and popped to get a coffee for the bus journey back (Starbucks Mochas were an expensive craving). The woman serving asked when I was due and I replied "a couple of days ago", something like that. She was totally shocked, believing that for the last few weeks women aren't able to leave their houses! You simply can't put your life on hold. Even if your waters did break before contractions start, its more likely to be a slow trickle. Wear a sanitary towel and enjoy being able to pop out the house when you feel like doing so!

My waters broke just after leaving work on my last day before going on mat leave (so much for having a few quiet days before having the baby...). I had just left the building with DH (we work at the same place) and suddenly felt quite wet. I sent him ahead so he could get the car if needed and just carried on walking home, about a 15 minute walk. I just tied a scarf around my waist and don't think anyone noticed anything. I wasn't in pain and made it home perfectly fine. We then had a quick dinner before going into hospital. Contractions weren't painful for the first few hours and I could have made it home from quite far away if necessary.

Thanks for talking some common sense into me everyone. I think it's just got to that point where I've been waiting so long I've gone a little loopy. But I've just got back home and tbh once I was out I wasn't half so worried about it. I suppose just getting on with it really is the only way.

alwaysthepessimist I'm being induced on friday morning, bit desperate for him to come out before then. I've had 2 sweeps and on monday I was 3cm dilated with bulging waters and cervix ready to go, so not sure what's taking baby so long! It's my first so kind of nervous

alwaysthepessimist · 17/01/2018 14:39

oh good luck for Friday!!! Hopefully he will come earlier but if not hope all goes well!

FlaviaAlbia · 17/01/2018 14:44

As brisk a walk as you can manage might help?

I tried every single old wives tale to get things going. I emptied a whole jar of that essential oil that's suppose to help into the bath, ate a hot curry, etc etc. I think what worked in the end was having to jog to the car as I got caught in a sudden downpour then going home and relaxing with a whiskey...

moita · 17/01/2018 15:34

Lots of walking (especially up and down stairs) worked for me.

UnderTheSleepingBaby · 17/01/2018 15:35

Where is the worst possible place you can imagine your waters breaking? At 9 days over I'd go there and hope that sods law will move things along!

Seriously though, you'll be fine, glad you got out for a bit

viques · 17/01/2018 15:40

I was thirteen when my mother, pregnant with my brother, came out to the car and told me to go into the supermarket to pick up and pay for her basket of shopping because her waters had gone by the frozen food cabinets.

I was emotionally scarred for life.......Stay inside OP. Sit on a heap of towels at all times.

FlaviaAlbia · 17/01/2018 15:52

At least it wasn't in a walk in freezer and she didn't hand you a chisel. Now that would scar you for life Grin

PinkyBlunder · 17/01/2018 16:08

I used to loiter in big name department stores hoping it would happen for the freebies.

I was doing this today Grin

If they’re going to go, they’ll go when you least expect it OP. With my first, I woke up early-ish in the morning and thought I needed a wee but I didn’t, I needed a towel. They definitely came movie style for me and contractions didn’t start for a good 2 hours after. Wasnt expecting it to happen that way at all!

Toasttea · 17/01/2018 18:16

Mine went and it wouldn't stop!!

TrashPanda · 17/01/2018 18:29

With my first they didn't go until I was pushing. I was kneeling next to the bed, midwife kneeling next to me rubbing my back, then pop. Made her jump and got my knees very wet Grin

With the second they went before any contractions when I laughed while walking. I felt a pop but it wasn't audible. I was walking with 5 or 6 other people and none of them knew. My knickers and trousers absorbed everything that came out at that point and contractions didn't start for 4 hours or so. My coat and car seat remained completely dry and water free.

maybebaby88 · 17/01/2018 19:33

alwaysthepessimist thanks! I think I may now be having contractions so maybe getting out and walking round really did help! Im not sure though as it's all in my back and doesn't really ever go away so impossible to time it. Fingers crossed though.

Thanks for the tips to bring on labour! It's interesting to hear how everyone's waters went, it's all so different for everyone! I suppose jt really is totally pointless to try and anticipate it

I am super rare, I had 4 children and had my waters break before labour started for 3 of them! However, it was always in the night. Luckily I slept on a bed pad thing "just in case" for the last few weeks.

123namechanged · 17/01/2018 19:56

With my first, I went to see the midwife at 39+6. She said she didn't think it would happen for a good few days...
2 hours later my waters broke when I was walking to my mums table for tea.
Very loud pop and I felt like I had wet myself!
He arrived 5 hours later.

With my second, I went 11 days over and they broke my waters there. No pop, just felt the trickle! 36 hours with her!!!

TeddyIsaHe · 17/01/2018 20:06

Ooh good luck op! Hope this is the start for you!

NapQueen · 17/01/2018 20:08

Could be the start of it+

ForFuckSakeSusan · 17/01/2018 20:16

OP is baby back to back by any chance? I only had contractions in my back and it was a constant feeling rather than coming and going. Be careful, i assumed it was just the beginning but almost gave birth in the car park! Good luck Flowers

maybebaby88 · 17/01/2018 20:38

forfucksakesusan No he is front to back, or he was last friday anyway u less he has moved. Oh god that must have been scary thinking you were going to give birth in a car park! After about an hour of it the pain has totally disappeared so it looks like I got excited too quickly 😞. No idea what it was but I'm guessing it wasn't contractions

OP posts:
ForFuckSakeSusan · 17/01/2018 21:05

OP, mine was also the right way round - even the day before but the little sod decided to do some gymnastics in the night! I hope your contractions ramp up again soon, we need a good live labour thread Grin

annlee3817 · 17/01/2018 21:07

Mine started to go during the night, woke up and went for a week. Got back into bed and felt a small gush, kept getting one Everytime I got back up. My contractions started 30 mins after this, and two hours after that they went completely. So not always Hollywood, if that helps at all.

Lj8893 · 17/01/2018 21:11

Less than 10% of women's waters break before labour!

maybebaby88 · 17/01/2018 22:27

Thanks for sharing your experiences, it really is very helpful and reassuring.

forfuckssakesusan Omg I will be so gutted if he has moved after being in the perfect position for so long! I will update if I do go into labour although I'm not holding out much hope of avoiding being induced to be honest. I think I have a very lazy baby 😒

I was one of the few who had a tidal wave, also before I went into labour but contractions started straight away afterwards. Mine went when I was in bed!
