Travelling at 30 weeks?

Hi all, we have a holiday in Europe booked in the summer but have just discovered I am pregnant and will be 30 weeks when we are due to fly out (10 days put there). I k ow I would need to check insurance carefully and need a doctor's note... but is it too risky? From what I have read, insurance wouldn't cover birth at that point as not considered premature. I have been passed due date with both babies, but both EMCs.

Has anyone done it?Anyone been refused a Dr note? Any (helpful) advice welcome x

I had something similar and would have been 34 weeks. I had to cancel the holiday as I wasn't allowed to board the cruise ship that far along. In your case, I would be mainly worried about the insurance. I recall reading about a couple who went to America, had a baby very early and were lumbered with £200,000 of medical bills. Check with your insurance and get it in writing if you can be covered. Can you get additional insurance? Like active sports but for an early birth? If it is Europe, are you not covered by your E111?

I recall looking at airplane insurance details and the doctors note needs to say there are no complications - check with the doctor and the airline what might prohibit you from flying if you had two EMCs

You can get specialist pregnancy insurance that would cover most eventualities on a holiday as long as you declare everything to them and the doctor clears you to fly

HolidaySafe is the company I believe so double check there and also your carrier to see what their requirements are and also that a pilot allows you entry (they have a right to refuse).

Risky, if it's a bog standard holiday and your safe then go for it just remember your skin will react different to heat or mozzie bites so be prepared.

Good luck

I checked and EHIC was valid but bit concerned if I have a scan and there is a complication, like placenta placement or something. At the moment we would only lose a few hundred pounds of deposit which isn't fun but better than thousands! sigh

I travelled from an eu country to a non eu country at 26 weeks. I had a terrible pregnancy and I was as nervous as hell but everyone was very accommodating. I wouldn't do it again though but it depends on how you feel.

Where are you travelling to? I live in a Med resort and have had 2 babies here somewhere could reassure you that there's fantastic care in certain places if you need it.

Aries456 · 16/01/2018 15:18

Hi mrsnec heading to Croatia and will be my first time there x

I feel your confusion... I am due to go to Italy at 33.5 weeks pregnant and am worried about going out there just in case I give birth whilst I'm out there.

Is there any way you can bring the date of the holiday forward? I'm going for a wedding so no flexibility there!

coffeeforone · 16/01/2018 18:05

I have just found out too and I will be about 29/30 weeks when we go on our summer holiday to Europe. I fully intend to go assuming pregnancy is smooth. We have annual insurance via bank so will just need to check if I’m covered.

YellowPrimula · 16/01/2018 18:10

Don't forget to check that the baby is insured as well as yourself.Commonly people insure themselves but then end up with a big bill for the baby's care because if it's early it may need NICu and other care and your insurance on,y covers you, the baby is a separate person.

coffeeforone · 16/01/2018 18:12

I’ve just had a quick look - i need to double check but I think my normal insurance will cover me up to the 32 week mark and I’ll be home be then

famousfour · 16/01/2018 18:14

Assuming no complications and you are covered for all treatment I would go as it's Europe. Just consider whether care can is accessible (i.e. you are not in some remote location) and it is a country you are happy to give birth in if needed. It's an individual choice.

coffeeforone · 16/01/2018 18:16

Also if you have ‘family cover’ then baby would be covered automatically I guess as they actually don’t take details of your children at any point

PerfumeIsAMessage · 16/01/2018 18:20

I flew when 36 wks with GP note but I was going home after working abroad..I'd probably try and bring a holiday forward tbh, most tour operators charge £50 x person to change a booking-better than losing it altogether?,

famousfour · 16/01/2018 18:33

oh and I travelled up to around 33 weeks including long haul around 29/30 weeks. No issues with doctors notes.

mrsnec · 17/01/2018 08:37

Oh I don't know anything about Croatia. I'd love to go there though.

I think I'd just bear in mind that most of Europe has the same if not better level of care as the UK. My pregnancies just made me stupidly nervous and anxious about everything.

If you are feeling ok now though and it's cheaper to bring it forward than cancel then that's not a bad suggestion. It will be cooler then too.

AnotherBunIntOven · 18/01/2018 22:10

Go, have fun! When you're 40+5 bouncing on balls, eating spicy curry's and drinking raspberry leaf tea you'll regret not going on such a fab holiday. 😜

Just make sure everything is ok with the pregnancy and check out the local healthcare. If you need to cancel due to pregnancy complications your insurance would cover you. And TBH, it would be the last thing on your mind.

Heartofglass12345 · 18/01/2018 22:30

Before i had kids i wouldve said carry on! But after going into spontaneous labour at 30+3 with my first and 33 weeks with my 2nd i personally wouldnt do it for obvious reasons
I was on holiday with my 1st, only cornwall but still 4 hours away and we had to stay there until there was a hospital bed available near home for him.

Aries456 · 19/01/2018 08:03

Thank you for all your replies. So confusing to think what is best! I spoke to my husband about bringing it forward to may half term (teachers!) but he thought it would be too rushed.
Think we have decided to do something nice in the UK this year and wait until next year to do the big family holiday because I just don't feel comfortable about any complications in Croatia. Also, I really want to enjoy myself when we do do a lovely holiday abroad, 7 months preggers, hot and unable to move around well (had pretty bad SPD with my last pregnancy) and unable to sip a drink (or 2!) in the evenings... may just be happier in soggy Cornwall!
