Is there anyone who has had more than 1 DC, had pre-eclampsia but then gone on to have another DC but had a normal pregnancy? Been docs this morning and they said that if I had it with my first (10 years ago) then it's almost 100% with this one. I had such a horrendous time after 34 weeks with DD, I didn't leave hospital for 4 weeks then induced at 38 weeks, vontuse and kielmans forceps. Any help would be great, I will accept though that at least this time I'm being monitored weekly.

Sadly i had it on both my DS's. (20yrs and 19yrs ago) my 1st was horrendous and was in hosp for mths my 2nd not so bad but both were born preterm. My 3rd was totally sailed thro until i had seperation of placenta and needed her delivered asap due to being RH- and now on my 4th, 34+1 and his growth has slowed. I am much older not that that is the reason but just remember being told all pregnancies are different...great help, but blood pressure and everything else on this 1 has all been perfect, disgustingly so 😊. Sorry its not really helpful.

A friend of mine had it with her first but not her next two, sorry don’t know any more details though

Funkyemzie · 12/01/2018 21:27

No guys, don't be sorry, these comments are perfect, thank you! I'm just so stressing about it, as you do. My BP and protien today at first check up was absolutely normal and no trace. I'm only 5 weeks today so just trying to chill. Xxx

Friend had it with her first, gave birth at 30 weeks, didn't have it with her second and went overdue!

Funkyemzie · 12/01/2018 22:34

Aww thank you! This is why I come on these forums. Xxx

I'm only 24 weeks so I don't have a definitive answer yet. I'm really surprised they told you it was 100% definite that you'll get it this time? I also developed it at 34 weeks and was induced straight away. When I had my consultant appt they just said they'd watch and wait, extra blood pressure checks, growth scans etc. They said it was more common if you've had it before but certainly not a given and if it does reoccur it tends to be later and milder. They didnt seem worried so im not either!

Clarabumps · 12/01/2018 22:48

I had it with my first, was closely monitored with my next two subsequent pregnancies but it never materialised. I wouldn't say it's a given that you'd get it again. I didn't worry about it, I was just glad I got extra checks.
Three healthy babies and nothing bad to report.

Girlwiththearabstrap · 12/01/2018 22:57

Just wanted to add - I'm not sure youll need to be monitored weekly right from 5/6 weeks? I had a consultant appointment at 20 weeks, and am having fortnightly checks from 26 weeks and weekly from 32. I think if you develop it early then they're incredibly cautious but moderate to late onset is less of a worry.

Funkyemzie · 13/01/2018 00:12

That's such a relief. Yes, docs literally said 100% I would get it again. I don't think they're monitoring me weekly from now but from after midwife. I'll see what happens, I'm fairly active and healthy so I'm hoping that a plus. Thank you everyone! Xxx

I had it with ds1, came on suddenly at 35/36 weeks, emcs at 36+6, hospitalised for a week (of hell) either side of his birth. With ds2 who is 8 weeks old I didn't have it, despite having high BP (caused by stress the appts caused me, I'm traumatised after the first time), I even had protein in urine twice too but turned out to be very little and unrelated. Delivery by csection at 39+3 because waters were gone 40 hours and contractions had stopped, so unrelated to pre e.

It's unbelievable how different things can be second time round. I'm 36 now so when I was pregnant with my 1st at 26 I really can't remember too much. I just remember small bits. It was the loneliness in hospital, I was bed bound as every time I stood up I passed out so I couldn't walk anywhere. Sorry, it just gets me a bit emotional. After reading your experiences though i feel much more positive! Xxx

Bearing in my mind this is almost 30 years ago, but... my mum had pre-eclampsia with me. I stopped growing at 27 weeks, was delivered by emcs at 30 weeks and both of us were very poorly. Fast toward 2 years and mum fell pregnant with my brother... completely fine! No pre-eclampsia, normal pregnancy and vaginal delivery. I find it strange they’ve said it’s 100% likely you’ll get it again, I’m not sure where that statistic has come from. Interestingly though, you did say this came from a doctor and not midwife. In my experience, the doctors don’t usually know as much information as the midwives in terms of pregnancy-related conditions. Have you spoken to a midwife about it?

flowa79 · 13/01/2018 16:01

I was 18 and 19 on my eldest boys. I developed it very early according to docs was 16 wks but managed to control with meds and all that time in hosp (worst 19wks of my life) im 38 on this lo and cant believe how much i forgot what being preggers is like!! Cant wait for it to b over now tho 6wks and counting

ZylaB · 13/01/2018 16:38

Was it a gp who said you'd definitely get it second time around? Because I don't mean to be rude about gps, but they aren't specialists I this area. I'm type 1 diabetic, so more likely to get preeclampsia, and I did with my daughter 3 years ago, hospitalised for 4 weeks before I was induced at 36 weeks.

Pregnant again, seen at hospital from 6 weeks pregnant because of the diabetes and the specialists say I might get it again, but it's not definite by any means, just that they will keep an eye on it. I'm 31 weeks and all is well so far.

So I'd get yourself referred to a consultant obstetrician and talk to them, not your gp 😄 Good luck.

I had pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome with DC1 which was picked up at 31 weeks. A GP told me that there's a 30% chance of me getting it again in my next pregnancy. And another doctor said I'll be monitored weekly from 20 weeks. Just found out I'm pregnant with DC2 so I'll be asking exactly what the plan is to ensure it's picked up again ASAP. Have you taken aspirin each day? I read that can help with prevention.
