Buying neutral

Hi,
Im 29 weeks and haven't found out the sex of my baby, throughout the whole of my pregnancy I've not been bothered about not finding out - although I am finding it sooo hard now, I really want to know!!
I'm not bothered what I have aslong as it's healthy it's just the fact I've seen loads of cute clothes which are either for a boy or girl and I am sick of buying WHITE!!!

How did people manage in this last stretch before giving birth?

I've found it really easy to buy neutral, just avoid dresses and frills, everything else is fair game really.

h&m, john lewis, m&s have been my faves.

DelphiniumBlue · 12/01/2018 12:13

Stop buying. Sounds like you have enough, save it for when the baby is born and you'll have a better idea of what will suit ( eg colouring) and what you need. Or get a few bright coloured sleepsuits.

RuskBaby · 12/01/2018 12:16

There are lots of different colours around rather than blue & pink. Frugi, next and others. Be warned, EVERY smaller baby clothing item we were gifted when our daughter arrived was pink.

BertrandRussell · 12/01/2018 12:19

How are you defining "boy" and "girl"?

mindutopia · 12/01/2018 12:22

You really don't need much to start. Get a set of white vests and white sleepsuits and then a few that aren't obviously gendered. We didn't find out with our first (who is a girl), but I found loads of really cute gender neutral vests and sleepsuits in reds, yellows, green, blue, grey, etc. We have lots that are animal themed and bug themed or striped, etc. You don't need to buy all white, but you also don't need lots to start either. It's easy to go online and order whatever you want after baby arrives and it will be with you in a couple days if you aren't finding things you like now. Btw, all that white and gender neutral stuff I bought with her means I've hardly had to buy anything for the first three months with baby#2. We did find out this time (it's our last, we just wanted to see what it was like to know this time) and we're having a boy. So it's nice to get to use it all again and to feel like we have all we need to start.

We have also kept it a surprise (I'm now 41+2 😬), and tried to keep the amount we have bought to a minimum. Sainsbury's are quite good online and boots do a lovely range of aqua panda stuff which is perfect for an unknown sex! Great quality too from both. If you've come this far, you'll be disappointed if you find out now! 😊

I've got quite a few babygrows from next and it all seems to be animal theme, I seen some cute outfits from Jacob Matthews I want to get whilst in the sale but can't just yet!! I'll keep looking and remember not to bother buying too much!
Thank you x

I didn’t find out with my first so I bought neutral, and then I found out with my second and bought neutral anyway (much easier to see if they’re clean etc), and I’m doing the same this time

NeilPetark · 12/01/2018 13:29

I didn’t find out with either of mine. Managed to find plenty of stuff from Next, even the supermarkets sell neutral. I don’t think I bought any white clothes. You’ll be inundated with pink and blue when you have your baby so enjoy the neutral!

bluechameleon · 12/01/2018 13:39

I haven't bought any white. I've bought yellow, green, red, orange, turquoise, purple, brown... I've mainly bought Scandi and organic brands second hand but you can find nice bright stuff on the high street too - little bird, boots miniclub, nutmeg at Morrison's all have nice bits.

OlennasWimple · 12/01/2018 13:43

You don't need to buy much in advance anyway: they only need vests and babygros for the first few months, and you might get clothes as presents too.

Personally I bought light blue, as that is what my baby would be wearing regardless, but as it happens he suited very bright colours so when he grew and needed more stuff that's what we went for. There are much nicer things available now than 13 years ago

EssentialHummus · 12/01/2018 13:49

DD here but very keen on colourful, not overly pink stuff. I've found it everywhere, with a bit of searching - yes, the £££ scandi brands but also Etsy/eBay, Gap, Next, Tesco, Sainsburys, M&S, John Lewis...

Im 36 weeks with a surprise and its never bothered me not finding out til the last couple of weeks.

I gave in and bought a pink and a blue going home outfit from the hospital. Whatever the baby doesnt wear, ill tak5r back for an exchange, if not ill give it to someone.

Even if it's just a pink and a blue hat for them to put on, still a bit of colour Grin

redavocado · 12/01/2018 14:31

I found the same thing! Everything is very cutesy and pink or covered in trucks.

I'm 28 weeks and now know what I'm having but trying to buy things for DD that aren't pink has been so hard! She's got quite a few bits with dinosaurs on now.

I think animals are probably the way to go if you want gender neutral. John Lewis had some really nice stuff though it's obviously more expensive than the supermarkets.

happymummy12345 · 12/01/2018 15:15

I never ever wanted to know. Didn't even consider it, not even a tiny part of me wanted to know, or even buy anything in pink or blue until after the birth. Of course I saw lovely bits and said that would be lovely if we have a girl, or I'd get that if we have a boy. But I never actually wanted to buy anything until after the birth.
Plus I think you can't beat dressing a newborn in white, and bringing them home in white. I'd never do anything else.

"Even if it's just a pink and a blue hat for them to put on, still a bit of colour"

What about all the other colours?

Shutupanddance1 · 12/01/2018 16:21

I’ve one DD and I’ve found out we are having a second DD - but I’m not keen on cutesy pink outfits (although my DD does wear pink gifts).

Mothercare, H&M and Dunnes stores (Irish brand) have lots of gorgeous stuff! H&M had the most amazing Cookie Monster + Elmo bodysuits that we had to buy Grin

Ekphrasis · 12/01/2018 16:52

Work at home mums who run their own baby making clothes tend to make neutral but very colourful clothes on Etsy and various ones on Facebook, besides places like John Lewis and h and m. I'm happy to pm some names.

It boils my piss; I hate baby boys clothes, so dull and colourless.

sammy891 · 12/01/2018 16:52

Mothercare, Next, John Lewis all have some lovely colourful neutral clothes.
