Boring topic I know but I could do with some help please!
FTM, and I’m unsure on how many blankets I will need when baby arrives. I’ve got grobags for him but I know I can’t use these from newborn. I’ve got a couple of cellular blankets for the Moses basket but realistically how many will I need please?
I’ve got a couple others to use in the pram/car seat.
Thank you in advance for your help! Smile

The bedroom is of a ‘normal’ temperature but I’m going to get a groegg in the next couple of days. I like the idea of using it as a night light for night time feeds and changes, is the light adequate?

The light from the gro egg is quite poor, not enough for me to see if he's latching on properly. I'd go for 6 cellular blankets to allow for some being in the wash

Mummyme87 · 10/01/2018 08:23

With DS1 I used sleeping bags from a month old, was too warm prior to that.

I have about 4 blankets for this baby and a few sleeping bags

Hippydippydoo · 10/01/2018 08:25

We used a really small grobag from birth, wasn't aware there was an issue with this? Blankets make me so nervous and I couldn't relax so felt much happier with a grobag.

Hippydippydoo · 10/01/2018 08:28

This is the one we used, was the only one we could find for newborns

I have 5, one gets used for the sleepyhead downstairs, one in the pram, one for the moses basket and one for the car seat with one spare for rotation in washing. So far (god knows how) our sicky baby hasn't spat up on them.

Geo eggs are notoriously unreliable, you get used to your baby very quickly, a ginger on the back will tell you if they are too hot/cold.
As for night lights, I have this one and its amazing! Variable brightness and colour (white/yellow) and it lasts for ages on the battery.

The only bedding recommended by hospitals for newborns is cellular blankets (the ones with the holes in). A good general rules is (as a minimum), three of everything - one on, one ready to go on and one in the wash. I would start with that as you can always order more if, e.g. you have an especially sicky baby!

Bobbiepin · 10/01/2018 08:30

A finger on the back of the neck. Shoving a red head down there may be uncomfortable.

And gro egg. Bloody autocorrect.

Smellybears · 10/01/2018 08:49

You’ve been so helpful thank you!
Right then, normal thermometer will be purchased and I love the look of that light, thank you!
Bobbiepin that’s made me laugh!! Grin

Bags aren't really usable for a few months, baby is too tiny. I think you need two nice soft stretchy wool blankets, ideally hand knit. Honestly after 4 kids I must have 25 blankets and 24 of them were gifts.

Cellular blankets are bullshit. Waste of time and money. Always too stiff and cold. Unless you get a big hand crocheted one made from good quality wool. You don't need them anyway.

OrangeCarpet · 10/01/2018 09:03

I think Ihad 4 cellular blankets. But I had summer babies so I didn’t really use them much as it was so hot they were just in a vest with a sheet on top. After first few weeks I got them in their sleeping bags. Easier and safer. Once they start moving around (sooner than you think) it keeps them covered and when they start pulling themselves up on the cot it makes it harder for them to try and climb out the cot. Also it’s easier when they have poo explosions because it keeps it all neatly in the sleeping bag. Except when the poo shoots up their back and and comes out at the neck!

Frazzled2207 · 10/01/2018 09:11

Yy to cellular blankets, maybe something thicker for taking out in pram on cold day (snowsuits impractical imo if you're going in and out as far too warm indoors and a bugger to get on/off whereas blankets can be easily adjusted)

However we also used sleeping bags from quite small, a few weeks IIRC

Mummyme87 · 10/01/2018 09:59

Follow the instructions on your grobag. Most you can use once they get to 10lb.. my dS was 10lb 5 at birth

Smellybears · 10/01/2018 10:03

Bobbiepin ive just ordered that light to arrive tomorrow, thank you!

Mummyme thankyou! I’ve checked them and they say from 8lb 13oz so shouldn’t have to wait too long to use.

If there is excess sleeping bag material do I need to fold it under so I can do the ‘feet to foot’ rule? So clueless!

OP posts:
Bobbiepin · 10/01/2018 10:13

HTH. Feet to foot is to stop them wriggling under blankets, if they are in a bag then they shouldn't be able to wriggle under (vital to make sure they can't in the bag) so it matters less about having them all the way down. You can tuck it under if it makes you feel better.

NickMyLipple · 10/01/2018 10:17

I've bought these for baby due in April. gro.co.uk/product/gro-snug/

Smellybears · 10/01/2018 10:22

I have looked at the gro swaddle snuggle but I’ve been told not to swaddle in one of the parent ed classes. There is so much conflicting information, it makes things even more confusing! Like I said, first time parent so haven’t any experience!

We have two grosnugs- version of the gro bag suitable from 5 pounds. Love them, hip friendly and you can have arms out if your lo doesn't like bring swaddled. We also have four cellular blankets for naps, car etc.

Potteryprincess30 · 10/01/2018 11:21

@Smellybears get light from IKEA or somewhere cheapish and then buy a low watt red bulb for it. New studies have showed that any light colour other then red disrupts babies sleep patterns, especially a soft blue glow (which many of the night lights/night feed lights are).

Good luck with everything Smile

Bobbiepin · 10/01/2018 11:24

We swaddled DD for the first few weeks, no problems, she loved being a little baby burrito until she found her arms are fun and now likes waving them around and sleeping with them above her head. Obviously do what you're comfortable with. The advice I was given was to stop swaddling when they can roll over, they'll need their arms to roll back again.
