Hi,

Not sure if this is the best place to ask but interested in views. Before we found out I was pregnant we booked a 2 week holiday to Portugal. Baby is due only 3 weeks before we're due to go. Obviously I need to move the holiday as that's too close for comfort but interested in views as I'm torn between trying to push the holiday back to September when baby will be 10-14 weeks old - depending on when he/she arrives or alternatively pushing the booking back to next year. Any views on taking baby away at such a young age? Do I need to worry about inoculations or anything?

Didn't travel with DD until she was 9 months so not sure on best thing to do. Thanks in advance.

We went to lanzarote when this baby was 6 weeks old. He is breastfed and I was fairly certain when booking that he would be, if he was bottle fed then I'm not sure I'd have been as easy going.

It was easy, no different to being at home for the baby.

I think if you are breastfeeding it will be a fairly easy enjoyable trip not so much if your bottle feeding sterilising and making feeds seems like it would be trickier when the tap water won't be suitable and only certain bottled water can be used

We took DD away at 14 weeks. She was bottle fed, but we had an apartment so sterilised in the microwave etc. Was the easiest holiday we've been on! She's always been a good sleeper which may have helped. But she napped really well after a little 10 minute swim and was happy enough in the shade watching the world go by.

I'm pregnant with DD2 and we're planning a holiday at a similar age. Although it won't be as relaxing with a 4 year old in tow!

I took my ds to Spain when he was 3months old don't see what a few weeks difference would make just try to keep them in the shade as much as you can x

If you bottle feed they do tommee tipper travel sterilisers and I just boiled the water as if sterilises it anyway which is the whole point ! My boy was fine x

Watching with interest, as I'm going to Gran Canaria when baby is 10weeks. However I have been before just not with a newborn.
Sorry to be a pain, but what useful things did you all bring for baby that you would recommend?
I'm gathering pram etc

I'd happily go anywhere from 6 weeks.

Whether you can get the passport processed in time has to be a factor too.

loveulotslikejellytots · 10/01/2018 06:43

Check the times on a passport first, but definitely go before they are cruising/walking. We took dd away when she was just 12 months, she just didn't want to sit still on the plane. She wasn't really into watching the iPad at the time (now I think you could do long haul and not know she's there is you had Mr Tumble on repeat Grin). She just wanted to wander round all the time which isn't possible on a plane.

Planning around 10-12 weeks as well once he's got the main 1st jabs.

Second trip would be around 5 months and 3rd around 8 months...

DH is still not aware about my crazy plans:D

mindutopia · 10/01/2018 10:09

After 3 months, I would consider it, so around 12 weeks. Before then I was just too overwhelmed to think about that sort of stuff and getting the passport organised. If getting the passport isn't an issue, then I think that timing would be fine, keeping in mind you could go overdue.

I'd probably think more about would you enjoy it with such a tiny baby and lots of night wakings? Or would you be much more relaxed if you put it off until later?

Thank you all so much for your replies - it's really helpful. I was primarily worried about flights etc when baby hadn't had all their jabs but sounds as though I might be worrying unnecessarily. We've taken dd to Portugal since she was 1 and always found that the supermarkets are so well stocked that nappies, wipes etc hasn't been a problem. I'm hoping to breastfeed again this time so hopefully that reduces some of the concerns - but at the same time helpful to know what solutions exist in case I need to bottle feed instead.

Think I'll contact the owner of the apartment and see if we can switch - thanks all! My dd will be thrilled that we'll be going!
