We started after the 20 week anomaly scan. A few people had bought us little things before that but I didn't feel like O could until after that. Also it has helped to spread the cost as we have 4/5 pay days from 20 weeks until he is here. I am 30 weeks now and the nursery is starting to take shape and we only have a few things left to buy.

K9pal7 · 07/01/2018 19:50

Am 8-9 weeks and haven't got anything until i have my 12 week scan. I know my sister from her last two pregnancies wait to buy mostly everything like cloths, prams, nursery set and other bits until her 20 week so she could get gender colourd clothes, prams and other bits. I brought her a few white/ cream bits in her early stages but then the rest after that scan.

Serafin87 · 07/01/2018 19:59

I'm almost 16 weeks and waited until the 12 week scan to start buying things, otherwise the cost can crop up. I think there's no right or wrong answer do whatever you feel is best, I'm starting to add nappies to my weekly shop too if that's any help xx

zaalitje · 08/01/2018 06:42

Currently 20 weeks, scan this week. There's a couple of bits I've been given but they're hidden away and I won't buy anything until 30+ weeks probably 35ish.
Things ordered online can be here in a couple of days so we'll have the bare minimum until we know bub is here safely.
I just can't bare the thought of losing bub and coming home to a decorated nursery full of things and having to deal with giving them away.

DaisyLand · 08/01/2018 07:27

Bought car seat and pushchair 25w. Nothing else. Right now 27 and not planning to buy anything til end feb or so. Baby is due in April.

Been given 5 bin bags full of clothes so that will do for a long time

wasMissD · 08/01/2018 07:32

I waited until 20 weeks. It was the halfway point, and I knew everything was ok. Also I wanted to know the gender and plan around that. I ordered my big stuff from John Lewis who stored it for ages on their Nursery List service. Think I had it delivered around 30 weeks.

hollyindie · 08/01/2018 08:10

I waited until 20 weeks because I was always going to find out what sex baby was so I could buy things more tailored to a boy/girl.

I also went and put deposits on buggy and furniture at about this time too so you can pay in instalments and they will keep it until you want it delivered (I went to mamas and papas and they did this)

You'll be amazed at how many people will buy you clothes etc. I've not bought many and ones I have done have been from the sales, he is going to be in and out of them so quick I'd rather spend the money when he is in them for longer.
If people ask if you want clothes etc I'd always say get a variety of sizes too! The more you have over the first year the easier it is for you xx

Oysterbabe · 08/01/2018 09:10

We started at about 30 weeks with our first. We didn't buy anything for our second.

harrietm87 · 08/01/2018 09:13

I'm 27 weeks and got our pram and car seat last week as John Lewis had an offer on, but that's it so far. Initially wanted to wait until after xmas in case there were good sales, but actually nothing I wanted was reduced so I'm going to hang on until around Feb (I'm due April) as our house is being done up and I'd rather wait until it's done.

For those who buy stuff to spread the cost - can't you just save the money instead? (Genuine question)

Hesburger · 08/01/2018 09:15

I finally bought a few bits this week at 37 weeks.

hollyindie · 08/01/2018 09:19

Harriet
I chose to spread the cost because I genuinely needed to know in my head that the pushchair and furniture was on order.

I also live with partner who isn't good with money AT ALL so I have to look after all financial situations. It was so much easier for me to do.

It didn't cost me anything extra and instead of saving monthly and getting tempted to buy things (or him getting tempted should I say) I just phoned mamas and papas on pay day to pay X amount off a month and then once paid they delivered to the door the day I wanted with a 2hour window xx

UrgentExitRequired · 08/01/2018 09:20

I chose to start buying things at 24/25 weeks, only because it coincided with xmas/NY, so I thought I might be able to get a few good deals.

harrietm87 · 08/01/2018 09:25

holly thanks - that makes sense! I did consider buying a load of nappies a while ago as I saw they were on offer, but then panicked that I wouldn't know how many of what size, and what if the brand didn't agree with the baby or something! I expect there will be a lot of last minute trips to the shops for my DH!

hollyindie · 08/01/2018 09:33

Harriet
Same here with the nappies etc my partner wants to buy loads of them now so we can "stock up" but he is a genuine shopperholic.
I've bought a pack for my hospital bag and was given 2 unopened packs from his sister who recently had a baby and had that size spare that's in a cupboard downstairs they will get me through the first couple of days of madness. Like you say some brands might not work for baby so no point stocking up and they be no good.

Mummyloves09 · 08/01/2018 09:51

I started getting bits and bobs from about 9 weeks but it was deals that couldn't be missed. But now I'm 18 weeks and have got steriliser, bottles, blankets, travel cot, swing, crib bumper set and bedding, changing bag and was given a crib. But all of the stuff I have bought has been on a 80% discount so I couldn't walk away .

DontCallMeJohnBoy · 08/01/2018 12:28

I'm 13 weeks and still waiting for the 1st NHS scan but we've hada private one. This is our 2nd baby and I know I ended up in hospital at 36 weeks with baby 1 so I didn't want to leave it late before buying or DH will be landed with it all.

We've pulled a list together of what we want, so we can suggest things if people ask, and we've bought a cot because it was a bargain on eBay and cheap enough that I know we'd be able to recoup our costs if something went wrong and we had to sell it again. Other major purchases we're waiting until after the 20 week scan and the ngetting bits as we see them, the odd pack of vests in the weekly shop etc.

Congratulations to everyone

Pugsleypugs · 08/01/2018 16:43

I waited till after the 20 week scan as that's the most important one IMO.

Newbiebaby1 · 08/01/2018 16:58

I’m 20 weeks and had my scan last Friday. I had already purchased nursery furniture and the pram as they were on offer and the ones I wanted. I had also bought a crib and Moses basket secondhand and now have clothes, bouncer, babocush, sterialiser kit, bottles. I think I am going to be very organised!

Nomad86 · 08/01/2018 17:29

I guess 20 weeks but you can always start researching things like prams (it feels like there's a million of them).

EastDulwichWife · 08/01/2018 17:33

@harrietm87 I think buying as you go also feels cheaper - even if you know you're spending the exact same amount - than doing one big shop!

I'm 20 weeks, scan next week and will buy as we go after that scan. We don't have anything yet (other than some teeny tiny socks!).

Waggily · 08/01/2018 17:56

I'm going against the grain here. Next time I'm pregnant (fingers crossed) I'm going to buy something straightaway for the baby, a teddy or blanket or something. I lost my second son in May at 15 weeks due to a genetic anomaly and I wish I had something of his, an actually belonging, just to show that he really did exist. I can totally understand not buying the big things but I really would recommend buying something early on, just in case. And you know, it's perfectly OK to be excited by tiny baby clothes and toys when you find out you're pregnant!

molifly · 08/01/2018 18:53

26 weeks and probably won't until 30 weeks

WineAndTiramisu · 08/01/2018 18:55

I didn't buy anything until after the 20 week scan, and actually only started last week (am 25 weeks now), mainly waiting for January sales!
Bought pram and car seat today and a few bits of clothes last week, a friend is giving me her old cot, so I think I've got most things now

carringtonm · 08/01/2018 19:02

I'm also 18 weeks and we bought a babygro this weekend. I started to feel movements last week and it just seemed like the right time. We both felt like even if something does go wrong then we could keep the outfit as a memory. Not planning to buy anything else for a while!

K9pal7 · 08/01/2018 19:38

I've started writing a list out for basic stuff. Things for nursery, pram and other expensive things as i can start to hopefully get them brought and then get lest expensive things eg clothes and other bit later on
