Hi risk blood results for Down Syndrome - Terrified!

Hi just wanted some advice.
My wife (sorry, I'm a useless bloke!) recently had the blood test for DS and it came back high risk (she's 31 and we have one beautiful little girl of 17m).
They gave her a score of 1:206 and we have to see the specialist on Thurs (tomorrow).
We are absolutely terrified and were good for nothing for 24 hours.
Should we be particularly concerned by the score of 1:206?
We don't have any frame of reference as our first baby's results came back low risk.
Any words will help.
Thanks

Cspeak that sounds really positive, I am pleased that you have feel so much better and positive now.

CSPEAK · 03/06/2007 00:13

Thanks guys, I didn't expect anyone to be up at this hour!

Yeah, we have been positive recently and it's the only way to go isn't it? The alternative is to wallow and life's too short for that rubbish.

We'll definitely keep you posted (if you want to read it, that is!) and we won't forget how helpful and kind everyone on here was.

I'm going to be totally overrun by females now. I don't stand a cat in hell's chance of getting my way ever again!

Oh well, mustn't grumble. I'll get a tv for the shed and a mini-fridge so I can watch the footie in peace.

I'll survive. I think!

Really pleased for you

My kids were playing with a young man with ds at the weekend actually, I di think of you- i thouight, if only the leaflerts / et available showed people like this young man and how genuinely interstinga nd engaging he is. All the leaflets we had with ds3 when we got the high risk rsults were called things like @Your child hass DOWNS SYNDROME' and just listed all thenpotential risks.

Will be loking for the birth annuncement now

Hello CSpeak - that's great news. I think you were probably having your 20-week scan sometime on Friday: so were we, and our baby looked fine too. There is a thread specifically for mums/dads due in October (ours due Oct 17), so you could always come and find us all there.

Thread is... here

Hi everyone. Sorry it's been so long in the update stakes! We had our little girl yesterday - 10/10 on her due date, which was surprising, considering her mother's propensity for tardiness...

Claire started with contractions about 6am on Wed morning. By 10.30, we'd called the midwife, who confirmed she was about 4cm and that we should be heading to hospital. The ride to the maternity ward seemed to take forever. The ward was a 3 minute walk from the entrance, ridiculously, so Claire had about 5 or 6 contractions on the walk there!

Anyway, we eventually got to the delivery suite and she gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 3.25pm. 7lb 15oz, which was a bit away from the 9.5lb the community midwives had predicted - THANKFULLY!

We've called her Pippa Honey Rose. It's her first night in her new home tonight and her big sister Phoebe (almost 2) is being extra cute to get more attention than the new addition.

All's well that ends well as they say, as Claire was diagnosed earlier this month with Thrombocytopenia (mouthful innit?) which is a low blood platelet count which can stop your blood clotting if you have a bleed. Luckily, she didn't have any complications and her count is starting to increase.

We just want to thank all of you again for your advice and encouragement in the past few months. We really didn't know where to turn and you helped us a lot with your reassuring stories. No matter what the outcome would have been, we were sure we could have coped thanks to you all. We were greatly touched by all of your help and encouragement.

I'll try to get some photos uploaded if I get a minute (and with 3 girls and me in the house, you can imagine how unlikely that will be!).

Take care and hope to hear from you soon...

James, Claire, Phoebe and Pippa x

oh haven't been in mumsnet so much recently and it is fab to see your birth announcement - welcome to your gorgeous wee girl.

My dh will empathise with you - he is one man with a wife and three daughters - poor thing surrounded by all that oestrogen.
congratulations and best wishes to your family.

to the op;

i had a one in 85 chance of having ds in my last pregnancy. i had c.v.s.

this is an invasive test with about a 1% risk of m/c

the reason i had c.v.s was because i didnt want a baby with ds (sorry ) and my risk was quite high.

after the test the babys heartbeat was checked. everything was fine and my m/c rate went down to just half percent.

i wouldnt have any tests that carried risks unless i was sure i would terminate the pregnancy. also my ds risk was higher than m/c risk.
in your case i wouldnt have the tests.
