After just finding out that I am expecting and it's my first child. The realisation of being overweight has really hit me. Is it safe for my baby if I follow the slimming world eating plan?

Yes. Slimming world is very safe and even midwife endorsed for pregnancy. They have a specific plan for pregnant women too.

Slimming world is an excellent diet to follow if you're overweight during pregnancy. Lots of carbs, fresh fruit and veg and very filling. I was overweight when I got pregnant and spoke to midwife about it who was happy for me to continue.
I then suffered with hyperemesis and couldn't follow the plan and lost nearly 10kg in first / second trimester. I've only put on 2.5 kg in total (39 weeks now!)
If your BMI is over 30 it's recommended that you take 5mg folic acid, which is a prescribed dose and 12.5 X the normal recommended daily dose of 400mcg. Also take a vitamin D supplement

That's brilliant Thankyou so much. I have an appointment with my gp on Tuesday to get some prescribed folic acid cause my BMI is high. I am definitely gunna join my local SW now. Xx

I dont do slimming world but have friends who have done it and it's midwife approved so totally safe in pregnancy - although I don't think the focus is on losing weight.
I was also a bit overweight when I got pregnant so although I'm not actively trying to lose weight I'm trying to count portion sizes, cut out crap (apart from christmas...) and exercise regularly - walking to and from work and gym 4 times a week.
