I’m currently 16 weeks with my first baby (totally clueless!!) and starting to make a list of things that we’ll need.
I was planning on buying a Chicco Next to Me for our bedroom and will obviously need a cot for the nursery however should I also buy a Moses basket or similar for sleeping downstairs?

I did and found it helpful. Congratulations!

We just used the carrycot from our travel system for downstairs and moses basket upstairs. Meant we got loads more use out of it actually as he refused to go in it for walks from about 10 weeks old, but would happily nap during the daytime in it for some reason.

LivelyMummy · 04/01/2018 13:24

We used a cot in our bedroom upstairs, Moses basket when downstairs and Carry cot from travel system when travelling as it was suitable for overnight sleep.

NapQueen · 04/01/2018 13:25

We used a tiny love 3 in 1 napper downstairs.

I used the carry cot from the prom for downstairs and a Moses basket upstairs. Don’t overthink things until baby actually arrives

I would recommend a full sized cot next to your bed if you have the space. The little bedside cots are expensive and they don't last long. If you decide you want baby in with you past a few months, they'll you end up needing to get something else entirely. We got a full sized Ikea cot, took one side off and lowered it to make it flush with our mattress. I used it for a year with my first (until she just started to sleep in bed with me after that). We did have a moses basket, but honestly used it once for 20 minutes. It was pretty useless. Dd was almost always in our arms or in a wrap. If we needed to put her down in the very early days, a bouncer chair or pram carrycot will do the trick if you already have one of those, or even just a soft mat on the floor (assuming you have no pets). I don't think you need an extra moses basket. We've gotten rid of ours between baby #1 and 2. We have a cot bed set up in the nursery for when we need that later.

We’ve bought a crib for the bedroom, cot for the nursery and Moses basket for downstairs

Like mind we just took the side off an ordinary cot and put it up against the bed. I was tempted by a chicco next to me but when we actually measured the bed our divan was too high for it to match it with (apparently a common issue with divan beds). Glad we didn't waste the money now as the cot with a baby nest in it until she was rolling was fine.

We also used the baby nest for downstairs naps during the day but will probably have yo rethink that for no 2 as I can't see no 1 leaving them alone if they are napping on the floor.

RiceButt · 04/01/2018 14:39

I only used the moses basket a few times. I found a nest much easier as he just napped next to me on the sofa in the nest. Takes up less room and can carry baby up to bed and straight into the next to me crib without disturbing him.

Helbelle75 · 04/01/2018 14:45

We did exactly the same hurricane. Originally we didn't have a moses basket downstairs but realised we needed one as soon as we came home.
The next to me has been amazing. It was a great travel cot over Christmas as well. We've only just moved dd out of it at 8 months, and have now brought her cot into our room.
You'll figure out the best way for you when baby arrives. Happy shopping!

Hurricanelily · 04/01/2018 15:45

Thanks for all your advice ladies.
I haven’t looked at prams yet so didn’t think about using the carrycot as an option.
We have a cat so I’d be a bit wary of having baby down low etc however I’ll be making sure they’re never in a room alone together.
Unfortunately there would be no room at the side of our bed for a full-size cot as our bed is huge and takes up most of the bedroom!
It really is a minefield with all the different options that are available.

We've got a cot for the nursery and a tutti bambini cozee bedside crib for our room. Planning on just putting her to sleep in the pram carrycot downstairs. We were going to get a moses basket but everyone I've spoke to said by a couple of months old the baby's had outgrown them so figured its a bit of a waste.

Newbiebaby1 · 04/01/2018 19:20

We’ve bought a chicco next to me for the bedroom, a cot for the nursery and a Moses basket for downstairs. I bought the chicco next to me and the Moses basket secondhand so I’ll ger new mattresses for both and resell them when I’m done with them 😊

Hurricanelily · 04/01/2018 20:11

I was thinking of buying second hand and reselling too. Seems a huge expense to be paying out for only a few months of use. New mattresses look to be relatively cheap though.

I got a next to me second hand for about 40 quid and a new matresss was only 20ish we don't have the room for a cot in the bedroom so I'm hoping the next to me will last at least 6 months, it's bigger than a moses basket so I'm hopeful.
Planning on using the pram carry cot downstairs also (saves buying a moses basket too)

NimbleKnitter · 05/01/2018 12:20

You can hire Moses baskets from bednest.

All the bedding is new, and they collect it when you're done (so less crap around the house!)
