Private 10 week scan - do work have to give me the time off?

Pretty much what it says in the title really.
I am looking to have a 10w scan so

  1. I can actually check there is a live baby - terrified of a MMC, and have had on/off spotting and
  2. I can also have the harmony test/NIPT. This is obviously a scan I am choosing to have myself before the standard 12week NHS scan. Are work still legally obliged to give me the time off. I was just going to say that I have a hospital appointment but wanted to check that they can't say no.

Thanks for any advice :)

I was advised by my work that legally I would only be given paid time off for NHS scans and appointments.

As my private scans were an added extra that I chose to have, I had to book these for the evening or weekends and go outside of work.

I think it depends on how kind/flexible your work are, but legally I don't think they have to give it you.

Congrats on your pregnancy.

Congrats on your pregnancy, I've not asked my work, i'm sure they'd say it's fine but also would expect me to recver those hours.
Unless harmony is something advised (i.e. DS risk) then it's also something you'd choose to as it's not compulsory as such.

I've had 4 private ones, i'm a constant worrier, and all of them have been on saturdays

My employer wouldn’t ask if they were NHS or not, so it should be fine but why would you? Private tests often have more flexibility - you can book evenings and weekends. Do that in case you’d rather they not know

Have you booked the scan yet? You'll find that these places normally offer lots of weekend and evening slots as (unlike the NHS) they have customers, not patients, and so have to offer them convenience.

My work is flexible enough that I can go whenever and just make it up later, but DH is a teacher so has to arrange any time off well in advance. For what it's worth his work were happy for him to take time off for my two early scans as well as my 12 week one, but my two early scans were at the EPU, and so hospital appointments. They might have been less impressed if they'd been private as you get so much more control over the timing of those.

I wouldn’t have thought so for a private early scan
