Does morning sickness really go away at 12 weeks?

I'm currently 8 weeks and have been so sick since 5 weeks. All day, all night vomiting and nausea.
Does this really go away by 12 weeks? I barely had any nausea with my first but this time around I can barely drink any fluids.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Mine didn't stop until more like 14-15 weeks. Week 10 was the worst but it did then start to gradually improve, until one day I realized I hadn't been sick/felt sick for days.

Do speak to your doctor if it's that bad, there are things they can offer to help.

Marmite27 · 03/01/2018 06:57

11 weeks with my first, 13 with my second.

There are people who are sick the whole way through, so it may not necessarily go. Speak to your midwife/dr if it’s getting too much for you.

5 pregnancies for me and had all day/night sickness every time until 30 minutes before labour! Sorry OP!!

I did find that the travel sickness wrist bands eased the nausea enough to be able to cope with life - but they didnt actually stop me vomiting.

Happies · 03/01/2018 07:06

Sorry to say I was sick and nauseous throughout my pregnancy.... funny how you just manage to live with it!

Drs can prescribe anti sickness meds if needed.
Hope you feel better soon x

huha · 03/01/2018 07:08

Mine stopped at 16 weeks. Sorry, OP. Are you on any meds to help?

Youvegotafriendinme · 03/01/2018 07:10

Sorry but it was 16w for me. I was actually sick for about 8/10 weeks then just nauseous but I couldn’t bring myself to eat more than a couple of biscuits each day. Hope yours goes. DSis has morning sickness for the whole of both her pregnancies and my other DSis hasn’t had it at all.

BikeRunSki · 03/01/2018 07:15

That sounds a lot more like hyperemisis than morning sickness. Mine went around 16 weeks, but I know people who had it full term. It’s awful, and you have my every sympathy.,

Have you seen your GP? There is medication available that can help. You don’t have to suffer alone. Read the Pregnancy Sickness Support link below first though, as not all GPs will give medication to pregnant women. But push for it!

Look Pregnancy Sickness Support here and MN Hyperemisis support thread here.

Please seek medical advice (if no GP appt available try walk in or A&E if you get very dehydrated). Are you managing to stay hydrated. At my worst the best I could do was melt ice cubes in my mouth. If your urine gets dark, then you need help.

blueberrymints · 03/01/2018 07:16

Thanks all! God I hope it doesn't last the whole pregnancy! I don't know how I'll cope!
My doctor gave me a prescription but I haven't collected it yet as I'm a bit nervous to take anything as I had a loss previously and I'm quite anxious about meds.
Especially as everyone else I mentioned it to said don't take anything!!! But then being dehydrated isn't exactly good either.

I'm so grateful to be pregnant and just reminding myself that I'm lucky. But I'm just so sick of being sick!

Mine didn't gone until around 20 weeks! Sorry! You cope though because that's what mummies do.

BikeRunSki · 03/01/2018 07:23

Also - are you at work, and does your employer know you are pregnant? If you are working, you (and they!) need to know that pregnancy related sickness must be recorded separately and you can not be penalised or disciplined for it..

Please pick up your prescription.

Tinkerclare · 03/01/2018 07:25

Except that's the problem - women are expected to "cope" when actually if you have sickness that is affecting your ability to live your life and keep anything down you need help. There are lots of safe medications. As pps have said, contact the wonderful Pregnancy Sickness Support

I'm 16 weeks and still have it first thing in the morning and periodically later in the day, but I don't feel constantly nauseous anymore so it has gradually improved.

silkpyjamasallday · 03/01/2018 08:24

Unfortunately mine lasted the entire pregnancy, I was still vomiting in labour. I had to give up work as I was so ill. The sickness lifted the moment DD was born though, and despite a 17 hour labour on an empty stomach I felt the best I had done for 40 weeks! Hopefully your nausea and sickness will subside before that point, but if you are struggling you can talk to your doctor or midwife about anti sickness medication.

Lifeofpies · 03/01/2018 08:26

So sorry your suffering, blueberrymints. I’m 10weeks and have all day nausea and vomiting. A prescription for promethazine has made a huge difference - I take one at night and it really enables me to function, sadly doesn’t get rid of nausea though.
I have had two MMC and was also worried and have had lots of people around me just seeing my vomiting as a plus (!) - I read the RCOG guidance (here www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/guidelines/gtg69/ ) and found that reassuring/helpful.
Do also get signed off work if you need to, there’s no shame in that.

I posted on the MN thread and got some great advice, and lurk on there now. Keeping fluids up is my priority, rather than food. Ice cubes, ice lollies, sips of squash, soda water... whatever you can manage.

Lifeofpies · 03/01/2018 08:27

Oh, I also bought some ketostix from amazon, which measure ketones in your urine and are a good way to assess dehydration. I believe if 3+ you need to go to hosp and get fluids. Lots of info on the MN support thread X

makeitpink · 03/01/2018 08:29

14+6 and still being sick! Sorry OP. Go to your GP mine have offered antisickness tablets if it carries on. Thanks

MissWilmottsGhost · 03/01/2018 08:34

Sorry but my "morning sickness" was 24/7 for about 17 weeks Flowers

Emu31 · 03/01/2018 08:51

Sorry you're suffering so badly OP, I've had the same so really sympathise. It does sound like hyperemesis to me which really should be treated medically. Please do not worry about taking the meds there is a lot of research to show that they are safe, much safer than you being so poorly and trying to carry on through it. You've had some great advice on here already. Pregnancy Sickness Support are fab and the info on their website about treatment options should reassure you. Though I know it's awful to think it might not go at 12 weeks (and doctors will insist that it does) I wouldn't make any big plans of trips away etc. in 2nd trimester as you won't want any pressure to do anything if it's still hanging around. Whilst there are lots of us who do suffer beyond 12 weeks, and even throughout, you are very much going through the worst bit now and many see a big improvement after about 14 weeks. My advice would be to take the meds at the prescribed dose, don't try to wean yourself off them (I did this to very vomity consequences!) and if they are not effective then go back to try something else. You may have to be a bit pushy which is difficult when so poorly but the meds really are safe and there is a big lack of understanding about this condition from many GPs. You will get through this.

Namechanger2735 · 03/01/2018 08:54

33 weeks and my head is still firmly down the toilet..as was with my first pregnancy where I was hospitalised around this time and sick until the end!
The beauty of pregnancy ay!

Orangesaretheonly · 03/01/2018 09:00

I am nearly 17 weeks and was sick over ten times a day from 8 weeks to about 14 and by 15 it had completely gone. Still get waves of nausea but I manage it by making sure I've always got something to eat and not leaving it too long between meals. You have my sympathy but it (hopefully) will pass! X

Rachyabbadabbadoo · 03/01/2018 09:11

I had awful morning-all-day sickness and mine did stop (quite abruptly too!) at 13 weeks, so there is hope! Sending you positive thoughts as it's very gruelling x

zaalitje · 03/01/2018 09:25

19 weeks tomorrow and it's still there.
It's now dry retching and light nausea though I have been properly sick a couple times over the past two weeks.

BigBaboonBum · 03/01/2018 09:35

My hyperemisis went away (mostly) at 9 weeks with my first, lingered awhile but wasn’t too bad. Second I didn’t have at all. Third it started at 11 weeks but hasn’t been anything close to as bad with my first, no hyperemisis.... it’s been different every time
