Low iron third trimester

Has anyone experienced low iron in third trimester?
My hb is 104 and ferritin only 5.. but I managed to raise my hb from 94 (or less) in 3 weeks with spatone sachets.

I feel like I'm close to being out of that 'anemia' range but dr is still concerned my ferritin stores are too low and wants to have strong tablets or infusion. Tablets give me horrible side effects but I would take them if I thought it would make much difference.

Are the hb or ferritin levels more important at birth? Clearly I'll keep taking spatone into the post natal period as it has helped boost me with no side effects.

For me, the awful feeling of anaemia was worse than any of the side effects from the iron tablets. You haven't got long to go, so I would just suck it up and get those iron levels up as much as you can because you'll feel terrible in labour and afterwards (especially if you bleed).

You need to have an HB of at least 12 (or 120) before delivery, there is a risk of bleeding if it is too low, plus the side effects of anaemia are not pleasant at all.

If advised I'd take the recommended meds from the hospital, as good as spa tone is, it's a supplement rather that a treatment for anaemia but definitely shouldn't be taken alongside medical treatment iyswim?

Well I'm lucky apart from usual pregnancy qualms I haven't noticed any symptoms of anaemia as such. Clearly tired but who isn't at this stage.

Normal haemoglobin is 120 for a non pregnant woman. The levels are different in pregnancy as the hb dilutes which extra blood volume. So I believe 110 is the cutoff or even 105 depending on which guidelines you read.

I'm hoping my hb going up will mean it's back in normal range by delivery.

I was prescribed a three-a-day iron tablet then after explaining to my midwife that I was only taking two as they made me so ill she prescribed me a much gentler one-a-day tablet which I felt fibe with. Betwwen that and making an effort to eat more iron righ foods, levels came back up. I think I was 109.

I would consider the infusion. I lost a lot of blood after my first birth and had practically no iron! Had two transfusions and it gets it up so quickly.

before i found i was pregnant with my daughter in 2014 i came down with what i felt was like a bad cold or maybe flu - tired, no energy, sickness etc etc etc

one night i nearly passed out and was sent by 111 down to the out of hours and the nurse took one look at me and hit the emergency button in the room and had my lie down on the bed as i was swarmed by a team who quite honestly went 'woah!'

Four hours later i was in the recieving ward getting woken up after oxygen and fluids being pumped into me, by a doctor who told me my haemaglobin was 50 and an emergency scope was getting ordered as i apparently had no reason to loose the amount of Hg i had.

Long story short - after a scope, lumbar puncture, CT, MRI and 5 pints of blood i was released on St Paddys day and had a few Newcastle Brown ales (helps the iron count) and three days later i found out i was 6 weeks pregnant.

Because of this im monitored rigirously as i developed Pernicious Anemia (b12) and need the injections every 2 months along with the added spray on tongue supplment i use.

PA (slight diffrence to b12 deficiency) can be horrible and mimic the anemia symptoms so if you do feel bad then ask them to include a b12 test in blood work.
